TEE TIMES | LIVE SCORING
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.--- Liam Johnston took his turn going low for the Chattanooga Mocs torching the Farm with a 6-under par 66 in the second round of the Carpet Capital Collegiate. His performance, which tied Stephan Jaeger's school-record in the event in 2009, led the Mocs to a team-best 282 (-6) at the prestigious event.
The round came one day after teammate Andrew Weathers carded a 5-under par 67 in the opening round. According to coach Mark Guhne, it is just what he was hoping for from his lineup.
“It's what you want to see,” Guhne stated. “You want to see different players step up through the course of an event. Liam was outstanding today. Hopefully we see someone else go deep tomorrow. Of course, I'm happy to see it from Liam and Andrew too.”
The 66 is a career collegiate low for Johnston. The Scot had an eagle, five birdies and just a single bogey on the day.
“It felt really good today,” Johnston said. “The putts were falling. I had a great start to the back nine. After I missed a short putt on 10, I went birdie-eagle on 11 and 12. (The 66) was a good number today.“
Johnston echoed his coach's thoughts.
“We have so much depth on this team,” he added. “I really think we can shoot these kind of scores all year. We're only four back of the lead, so anyone can win it…just eight shots separate first and 11th-place.”
The team is tied for eighth with Wake Forest in a crowded field. The duo is three ahead of Tennessee in 10th and four clear of North Carolina in 11th. The Mocs and Demon Deacons are a mere four shots out of the lead held by Auburn and Georgia Tech. Chattanooga's two-day total of 573 (-3) is a new school low through 36 holes at the tourney.
Ollie Schneiderjans of Georgia Tech is the individual leader. His 8-under 64 propelled him into the lead at 8 under (136), one shot ahead of Robby Shelton of Alabama at 7 under. Miller Capps (Wake Forest) and Davis Womble (Wake Forest) are two back at -6.
Johnston (142) and Weathers (144) are tied for 16th and 24th so far. Sophomore Ewan Scott is tied for 29th after a 1-over 73 put him a stroke behind Weathers at 145 (+1). Sophomore Wes Gosselin answered his opening 76 with a 1-under par 71 and is tied for 42nd at 3 over (147). Sophomore Zac Stolz added a level-par 72 and is six behind Gosselin at 153.
Chattanooga starts off No. 1 at 7:30 a.m., Sunday morning. Stolz is the first Moc off with Gosselin (7:39), Scott (7:48), Weathers (7:57) and Johnston (8:06). The Mocs are paired with South Carolina and Wake Forest.
