Mocs Takeover SoCon After Exciting 3-1 Win Over ETSU

UTC improved to 17-3 and 6-1 in league action.

The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team rolled over ETSU in an exciting 3-1 win Friday. The match was a battle for the No. 1 spot in the Southern Conference, which improved UTC to 17-3 and 6-1 in league action.

"We were super disciplined and focused," head coach Travis Filar stated. "We wanted to establish ourselves to let the conference see that we're here and we're doing good things."

Before the match, the Mocs and the Bucs were at the top of the league with 5-1 records.

Chattanooga dominated the first set with a 25-13 showing. After going down 5-0 to start the second, UTC worked their way back. Following 13-13, the Mocs led for the rest of the set, winning 25-16.

"We did a really great job attacking ETSU in the first two sets," Filar said. "We kept saying, 'Let's keep it away from their block, however we can, around, over, off, but don't get blocked.'"

The Bucs came back after the intermission to claim the third 25-22, but Chattanooga bounced back to clinch the match 25-16 in the fourth.

ETSU is known for its blocking, leading the SoCon with 2.35 per set. However, the Mocs didn't allow the Bucs a block until the third frame. UTC racked up 12 blocks, in comparison to ETSU's seven.

"We frustrated them in the first two sets because they tried to block us but our coverage was really solid," explained Filar. "That was a big part of the match, along with us establishing a presence at the net."

Senior Lauren Gainer (Boca Raton, Fla.) paced the match with one solo block and five assisted.

Three Mocs posted double-digit kills, including senior Sarah Batterton (Colbert, Wash.) with 16, and juniors Allie Davenport (Tyrone, Ga.) and Kristy Wieser (Lincoln, Neb.) racked up 12 and 11 respectively.

Chattanooga marked a .255 attack percentage with the help of sophomore Lauren Greenspoon (Houston, Texas) making 44 assists.

Senior Catherine Chason (Alpharetta, Ga.) led the back row at 20 digs. Freshman Miranda Elpers (Louisville, Ky.) recorded 14 and senior Briana Reid (Houston, Texas) had 13.

Friday's match was Bone Marrow Donation Awareness night in memory of the late Eddie Parman, the father of former Chattanooga volleyball student-athlete Heather Parman.
