Chattanooga Wins Thrilling 3-1 Match at Mercer

UTC improves to 19-4 and 8-2 in Southern Conference play.
The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team clinched a thrilling 3-1 win over Mercer in Macon, Ga., on Thursday. UTC improves to 19-4 and 8-2 in Southern Conference play.
"I'm really, really proud of our girls, showing great resiliency and toughness in a very tough gym to play in," head coach Travis Filar stated.
To start the match, the teams went back and forth, exchanging leads in the first. The Mocs dropped the frame 25-23. At 12-12 in the second, UTC won five points in a row and held the lead the rest of the set. Sophomore Lauren Greenspoon (Houston, Texas) closed it out with an ace at 25-20.
"This is how road wins are," said Filar. "You may not play your best in a gym you're not used to, but you just find a way to win. We found different ways to win. We called on our full arsenal of offense tonight."
After the intermission, Chattanooga came out firing, winning 10 of the first 11 points. The squad continued dominance throughout the frame, clinching the third 25-14. Despite trailing for the majority of the fourth, the Mocs climbed back to claim the final frame 26-24.
Chattanooga racked up 13 service aces, compared to the Bears' three. Freshman Rachel Petkosh (Merritt Island, Fla.) featured four and freshman Miranda Elpers (Louisville, Ky.) made three. Prior to the matchup, Mercer led the league in aces per set, averaging 1.77 per set.
Junior Allie Davenport (Tyrone, Ga.) paced the squad with 18 kills, while junior Kristy Wieser (Lincoln, Neb.) scored a team-best .611 hitting percentage. Senior Sarah Batterton (Colbert, Wash.) posted 10 kills and a .471 clip.
Greenspoon made 30 assists, and sophomore Madison Bergren (Muncie, Ind.) followed with 15.
Senior Catherine Chason (Alpharetta, Ga.) tallied a team-high of 17 digs, and Elpers had 10.
The Mocs return home to face Wofford in Maclellan Gym Saturday at Noon.
