Mocs Sweep Western Carolina in SoCon Tournament Quarterfinals

This is the Mocs first win in the conference tournament since Nov. 16, 2007.

The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team swept Western Carolina (3-0) in the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference Championships in Cullowhee, N.C. The Mocs advance to the semifinals against No. 5 ETSU Sunday at 2:00 p.m.

"We started really strong," head coach Travis Filar stated. "That was a big emphasis coming into practice this past week, to start strong."

Improving to 25-5 and 14-3 in league action, this is the Mocs first win in the conference tournament since Nov. 16, 2007 against Elon (3-1).

"I believe in our student-athletes because we are tournament-ready," Filar said. "We are battle-tested."

Chattanooga beat the Catamounts last weekend in a five-set battle, after dropping the first two sets. This time around was a much different story.

Despite Western Carolina having the lead for the majority of the first, the Mocs clinched the set 25-22 by winning six out of the last seven points after being down 21-18.

"We had been going down 0-2 in a couple matches recently, so for us, to start the way we did was great," explained Filar.

Chattanooga fell behind 16-11 in the second. However, UTC fought back, going on a five-point run, including four kills in a row to make it 19-19. The Mocs clinched the second after a kill by junior Allie Davenport (Tyrone, Ga.) and senior Sarah Batterton (Colbert, Wash.), 29-27.

UTC held the lead for the entire third frame, finishing the match 25-19.

Davenport, senior Briana Reid (Houston, Texas) and sophomore Madison Bergren (Muncie, Ind.) all posted double-doubles. Davenport collected a team-best 19 kills and 12 digs, while Reid hit 12 kills and 19 digs. Bergren recorded 44 assists and 14 digs.

Senior Lauren Gainer (Boca Raton, Fla.) paced the Mocs with three blocks and a .412 hitting percentage.

Senior Catherine Chason (Alpharetta, Ga.) led the squad with 30 digs, a season-best for a three-set match.
