Head coach Russ HuesmanOpening statement."I thought it was a tremendous job by our football team to beat a team that's really good. We played well, especially offensively. We executed offensively. We converted some big third downs. We converted a big forth down there, so I thought offensively we did tremendous today."
"When you put up 48 points offensively and do the things you do, I'm proud of them. Defensively we did enough. First half we did really well. Second half was not very good. Fordham had a lot to do with that. I think the quarterback for Fordham is an excellent player.
"They have good wide outs. Their well-coached. Them not having Chase Edmonds today I know hurt them. Obviously if we didn't have
Derrick Craine, we'd be hurting too and I understand that."
"Great year by Fordham this year. For those guys to be 9-2 and lose 18 starters off the team from the previous year is unbelievable. I don't know how many teams in the country can do that. I know they're disappointed, but they should be proud of the kind of year they had. We played well today. So proud of our guys especially offensively."
On what was important to win this game."We played well we executed well. In the team meeting before the game, I said for us to win this game we have to be physical and dominate both sides of the ball up front. You guys know that any time we are physical up front and we dominate up front we play really well on offensive, and I think our offensive line did that today, awfully proud of them. Defensive line I thought played great, put pressure on him and harassed him most of the day. I think we had five sacks."
"The back end I'm extremely disappointed. I hate to say that 50-20 but we expect great things defensively. We expect playmakers. We expect people to make plays and there were three or four plays there that were really disappointing that we have to get corrected."
Thoughts on Jacksonville State. "My initial thoughts are they are an excellent football team. They deserve to be No. 1 in the country. I'm on the coaches' poll voting, and I voted them No. 1in the country for the last seven or eight weeks. I think they have a tremendous football team. We're going to have to play extremely well especially at their place to come out with a win."
On the first half."That was about as good as we could do. We were getting stops on defense. We got the pick-six. We score every time we touched the ball. I'm just not sure if you can play any better in the first half than we did, when it got to 31-0."
"That first drive in the second half set a tempo there a little bit and kind of said this one's over. We needed that. If we had gone three and out and punted the ball and gave up a quick one, you never know what would have happened."
How important have these first halves been on getting these wins?"Obviously they've been huge because we have played well in the first half on both sides of the ball. I think offensively we played good in the second half today too. Our offensive coaches and our players did an unbelievable job.
"I was disappointed defensively in the second half but I think for the most part it was a really complete game. It was disappointing you give up some plays, it probably should never happen. Give Fordham credit. I love their quarterback. I think he's an excellent player. They have a good football team. They deserve to be in the playoffs. We played well today."
Jacob Huesman, quarterback, seniorOn offensive line."Those guys were fantastic today. When we called run plays, they were playing on the other side of the line of scrimmage which is exactly what you want, opening up big lanes. They were firm at pass protection. There were plenty of times I had to throw back there.
"I'm really proud of those guys. They really started playing well together especially as of lately. I'm really proud of them. I know they'll continue it throughout the playoffs here."
How important was the third quarter opening drive?"That was big time. I think the worst thing we could have done was come out and go three and out right there and give them the ball right back. To come out and send them a message there at the beginning of the second half is exactly what we needed to do."
How big of a momentum boost was the first half?"It was huge. The defense really helped us out in the first half, played excellent.
Lucas Webb's pick-six was huge. We needed to come in and send a message, execute and move the ball. I think it was great for us to experience scoring 50 points in a game. Hopefully we will experience it again."
Lucas Webb, defensive back, sophomoreOn the pick-six."It was one of the blitzes that we have practiced all week. The linebackers did a great job at executing, rushing the quarterback. It was something that we practiced to help out another guy and be in the middle and be a quarterback scramble guy. He just kind of threw it to me. They had great blocking on the edge too, so I was able to take it back."Â
Fordham head Coach Joe MoorheadThoughts on the game."First off, you have to give credit co Coach
Russ Huesman and his staff. They did a great job with developing their game plan, and they have a very talented team. When you reach this part of the season and only have 24 teams left, you find out how the speed of the game and margin of error relate a lot to each other. The margin of error for a great team like UTC is very small.
"There were some opportunities in the first half that we should have capitalized on - some third down plays and hitting open receivers downfield when we needed. We came out in the second half and played like the score was 0-0. They came out and competed in the second half, and I am incredibly proud of this team. Losing 19 of 22 starters and getting to the first round of the playoffs is a real credit to this team."
On running back Chase Edmonds."Chase injured his ankle in the Georgetown game. We had a bye week and rested him up on this last week of practice, so he gave it a whirl and thought he was healthy enough to play. Unfortunately, he got hit early and it just wasn't working for him. We didn't want to put him in a position to further hurt himself."
Kevin Anderson, Fordham quarterback, juniorThoughts on Chattanooga's defense"They're one of the best team we have played. Their defense is great - one of the top defenses in the country. They played fast, hard and I have to give them a lot of credit. They were classy guys. They weren't talking trash or anything like that. They played hard and they're great players."
