Joyner Claims Record in Loss to #1 UConn

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- University of Tennessee at Chattanooga junior Jasmine Joyner (Southaven, Miss.) claimed the UTC record for career blocked shots one day after tying the mark in the Mocs' 79-31 loss to top-ranked UConn Monday night at the McKenzie Arena. Chattanooga falls to 5-3 on the year while the Huskies remain unbeaten at 4-0.

Joyner led the Mocs with eight points and seven rebounds while adding four blocked shots to her career total to surpass Alex Anderson (2005-08) who set the record with 221. Joyner now has 225 and has sole possession of sixth place in the Southern Conference.

Sophomore Keiana Gilbert (Pulaski, Tenn.) was 3-of-6 on the night with eight points and Queen Alford (Decatur, Ga.) added five points for the Mocs. Aryanna Gilbert (Pulaski, Tenn.) and Alicia Payne (Memphis, Tenn.) each added four points and three rebounds.

Chattanooga came out firing on all cylinders in the opening quarter shooting 45.5 percent (5-11) in the frame but trailed UConn 19-11 after 10 minutes. Joyner was 2-of-3 in the first with five points and getting her record breaking block on an attempt by UConn's Gabby Williams.

In the second, UTC played it a bit closer, 18-12 in the period, but the Huskies' lead grew to 37-23 at the break. The Mocs were 5-of-19 in the second quarter with Payne scoring all four of her points in the period.

"I thought we played hard," Chattanooga head coach Jim Foster said. "I don't think we played necessarily smart, but I thought we played hard. Especially in the first half."

UConn put together a 23-5 run in the third quarter to put Chattanooga's hope for a comeback out of reach. The Huskies were 8-of-11 (72.7%) from the floor and made all seven free throw attempts in the period. Stewart and Kia Nurse combined for 13 of the Connecticut points making 4-of-5 and 5-of-5 from the charity stripe.

"We stopped moving the ball," Foster said. "We were very tentative. We threw the ball ahead of one of our players three times and being guarded by a post player, we had numbers. We didn't attack and that wasn't aggressive."

Chattanooga shot 24.5 percent for the game (13-53) and were outrebounded 45-23 by UConn who shot 55.4 percent for the game, making 31-of-56 shots. Moriah Jefferson led the Huskies with 15 points and Williams recorded a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Breanna Stewart added 14 points, three assists and four blocked shots and Morgan Tuck was the fourth UConn player in double figures with 10 points. Napheesa Collier also had a game-high 12 rebounds for the Huskies with eight points off the bench.

In the paint, UConn outscored the Mocs 56-10 and had 24 points off 20 UTC miscues. The Huskie bench contributed 18 points.

Chattanooga will take the next 12 days off for exams before heading off to Tampa, Fla., to take on South Florida on December 13.
