Chattanooga Football Postgame QuotesÂ
Chattanooga at MercerÂ
Five Star Stadium—Macon, Ga.
Saturday, Nov. 7, 2015
Head Coach Russ Huesman
Opening statement:
"We played hard. Our guys fought. I am proud of the fight we gave. We got after it. They got after us. They played a really good game. They were ready to play and we fought, but you can't turn the ball over four times and then not punch the ball in on the one-yard line and expect to win a game. We probably had a ton of yards out here today and just 14 points to show for it."
On playing a Mercer team that had so many close losses:
"Our guys knew they were good. They can watch the film and see that they are good. We understood that we were playing a good team, on the road, hostile environment. Our guys played hard. If they had come out and slopped around and not played hard, then that is different."
Thoughts on The Citadel:Â
"We have to win the game. Automatic bid, conference championship, if we win that game. There are no other thoughts about it. We have to win the game."
Jacob Huesman, quarterback, seniorÂ
On what he took away offensively from the game:Â
"We have to take better care of the football. It doesn't matter who you are who you are playing, but four turnovers will put you in a bad position. We moved the ball pretty well when we were able to hold on to it, and you can see what we are able to do, but we turned the ball over in some bad spots and gave them the short field, as well as not being able to convert in the redzone one time. There were a bunch of plays that we could have executed that would have put us in a winning position."Â
On converting multiple third and fourth down situations to put the team in a winning position:Â
"It was huge for us and I wish that we weren't in those third-and-long situations, but we did a good job converting them. That has been our hangup this year is that when we put ourselves in a third and long situation, we haven't done a good job picking it up, but today we were able to convert those. There could have been times where we were punting the ball and not give ourselves a chance, and it was big time for us."Â
On shifting the focus to The Citadel and the importance of the game:Â
"We really have to put this game behind us and for me and the rest of the team, I know we are going to prepare more than we ever have and give it our best shot next Saturday. This is a huge game next week as far as the conference goes and we can still make it happen. It's all just going to take a great week of preparation and a great week of practice."Â
Derrick Craine, running back, junior
On team's performance against Mercer:Â
"We didn't play as well as I thought we could, but I thought that we fought hard on both sides of the ball. Mercer is an outstanding team and they played very hard today. They outplayed us today but we have to get back into the office and get ready for Citadel next week."Â On importance of next week against the Citadel:Â
"Coach (Huesman) told us to keep our head up and continue to play, because next week determines everything for us. We are going to get back to work this week and really focus on getting back to ourselves, and getting back to the Chattanooga Mocs again. We just have to focus on the The Citadel and make that our goal for next week."Â
James Stovall, wide receiver, sophomore
On turnovers being a crucial factor in the game:Â
"Our offense was moving the ball, but anytime you have four turnovers it is always going to be hard to win. All props to Mercer because they came out hard and ready to win and they deserved it."Â
On the offense taking advantage of middle routes for big gains:Â
"I felt like our offensive coordinator set us up in perfect position. There were times that we were moving the ball, but then a turnover would hit us, and that hurt us. We weren't in bad positions on offense, it's just that our turnovers hurt us."Â
Lucas Webb, defensive back, sophomore
Thoughts on Mercer and the overall game:Â
"Credit to Mercer because they have athletes and are a good team. Coach Huesman told us that when you are a good team, opponents will always try to give you their best, and that is what happened tonight."Â
On Mercer quarterback John Russ' running game:Â
"We just needed to play sound football and know our assignments, and I just feel like some of the times we were a little out of sync a bit."Â
On his interception:Â
"It all just goes down to my teammates coming off the defensive line and the rush, so I have to give the credit to my teammates."Â
