TEE TIMES | LIVE SCORING
PINEHURST, N.C.--- Wes Gosselin's 1-under par 71 led a solid performance from the Chattanooga Mocs men's golf team. The squad is in third-place at 291 (+3), five shots behind leader ETSU (286) and two shy of Wofford (289) in second.
Gosselin's 71 was supported by 1-over 73's from Andrew Weathers and Ewan Scott, while Liam Johnston turned in a 2-over 74 to complete the team score. Brooks Thomas was one off Johnston's pace with a 75.
“All five of them played pretty solid today,” coach Mark Guhne stated. “You can't win the tournament the first day, but you can certainly lose it. We didn't have anyone go low, but no one had a really bad day either.
“We dropped a 75,” he added. “The next lowest drop score was 81 so that really puts the stamp on how solid our play was as a team.”
Gosselin had one misstep in his round with a double bogey on 13. Birdies at eight, 10, 15 and 18 came when the putter caught up with his ball-striking.
“Wes has been playing well,” Guhne continued. “As he gains more and more confidence, he's going to be a great player for us. Every time he puts an under-par round on the board, it solidifies what he already knows about himself, and what we know.
“Wes and Andrew both struggled a little bit in the last tournament, so it's great to see them get off to a good start.”
The score came in a bit of an odd fashion. Generally, when the Mocs play well, they dominate on the par 5's. The squad was 44 under over the last three tournaments on those holes. They played even on the four at Pinehurst National No. 9 today which was another good sign to Guhne.
“To be sitting where we are right now, with as poor as I felt we played the par 5's…that says a whole lot,” Guhne concluded. “Hopefully tomorrow we can play those holes like we are supposed to and get a few more red numbers on the board.”
Gosselin is five strokes behind early leader J.T. Poston from Western Carolina. The defending champion fired a 66 (-6) to lead Wofford's Brannan Hudson by a shot.
The Mocs are paired with the Bucs and Terriers for round two. The trio tees off at 8:50 a.m., with Thomas leading the way. Johnston (9:00), Weathers (9:10), Scott (9:20) and Gosselin (9:30) follow close behind as fans can click the live scoring link above to keep tabs.
