University of Tennessee at Chattanooga junior Luke Saunders is the recipient of the Southern Conference's Don Bunch/Buddy Hartsell Sportsmanship Award, the league office announced this week. Saunders is the third Moc in school history to win the prestigious honor, joining Jordan Goetzman (2000) and Jason Ontog (2002 and 2003).
Saunders competed in the middle of the UTC singles lineup this spring and spent most of the year paired with fellow junior Nick Wingord in doubles. He has been a starter all three years with the Mocs and was 3-1 at No. 4 singles. He also had a 9-7 record in doubles action with Wingord.
“This is a very well-deserved honor for Luke,” stated UTC head coach Carlos Garcia. “He always carries himself in a professional manner and is an excellent representative of UTC. He is exactly the kind of student-athlete we like here at Chattanooga.”
The Mocs are off to the SoCon Tournament in Greenville, S.C., this weekend. UTC faces second-seeded Furman on Friday, April 24, at 3:00 p.m. (E.D.T.). Be sure to check the men's tennis schedule page on GoMocs.com for a link to live scoring.
