Soccer Battles Elon to 2-0 Loss Sunday

Mocs don't allow a first half goal through three games

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's soccer team fell 2-0 to Elon Sunday afternoon in non-conference action at Finley Stadium. The Mocs drop to 0-3 on the year while the Phoenix improve to 2-1 overall.

For the third straight game, the Mocs did not allow a first-half goal. However, the Phoenix were able to strike twice in the second half for the win.

"We've been competitive in all three games," Chattanooga head coach Gavin McKinney said. "We need to get results. We've got to find some way to grind it out."

The Mocs had six shots on the day with three on goal. Late in the match, sophomore McKenzie Gregg (Newport, Tenn.) fired a rocket from deep and it was knocked over the bar by Elon keeper Hanna Macaulay in the 89th minute.

"McKenzie had a great strike there at the end," McKinney said. "The keeper tapped it over the bar. Skylar Brewer has knocked on the door a few times and Sam Hogan has created some chances for us."

Sophomore Abby Linder (Germantown, Tenn.) and junior Ashley Simmons (Hixson, Tenn.) each had a shot on goal for the Mocs and junior keeper Katie Emig (Knoxville, Tenn.) had one save in the game.

Elon's Kelly Siewers had both goals for the Phoenix with her first on a header in the 53rd minute assisted by Sydney Schilling. Her second came in the 84th minute assisted by Nyah Spearman for the final tally.

"We've seen improvements," McKinney said. "But it's got to start showing. Seeing improvement in performance is one thing, but I don't think we can be satisfied with that. We want results. We want to find some way to win games."

The Mocs will hit the road for a four-game road stretch that begins Friday night in Nashville against Lipscomb. The game is set to kick off at 8 p.m. Eastern time at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex.
