Mocs Undefeated on the Weekend, Clinch Tournament Title

The Mocs posted two 3-0 wins on Saturday against Gardner-Webb and Austin Peay, which improved their record to 7-2.

The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team clinched the Scenic City Showdown - Presented by Hampton Inn & Suites (Downtown, Chattanooga) tournament title after going undefeated on the weekend.

"I couldn't be more excited with how we played," head coach Travis Filar stated. "I know these teams are going to be similar to conference teams, and to go 3-0 on the weekend this way, I couldn't be more excited for this group."

The Mocs posted two 3-0 wins on Saturday against Gardner-Webb and Austin Peay, which improved their record to 7-2. The two wins marked Chattanooga's fifth three-set win of the season.

In both matches, Allie Davenport (Tyrone, Ga.) led the team in kills, with 15 against Gardner-Webb and 13 versus Austin Peay, in addition to posting a .500 attack percentage in both. She helped the Mocs reach a collective 91 kills throughout the two matches.

UTC also recorded impressive marks from the service line. Lauren Greenspoon (Houston, Texas), Catherine Chason (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Kristy Wieser (Lincoln, Neb.) each served two aces in-a-row.

Throughout the two matches, Sarah Batterton (Colbert, Wash.) paced the team with five block assists, helping UTC reach 13 total team blocks.

Three Mocs were featured on the all-tournament team, which included Batterton, Greenspoon and Chason as MVP.

"Overall, what really made leaps and bounds was our defense," Filar said. "We played really solid, good defense with Catherine Chason leading the charge. She was the most outstanding player of the tournament. She really anchored our back court in serve receive and defense."

UAB's Gabby Deshotel, Gardner-Webb's Kaelyn Dyson and Austin Peay's Kaylee Taff and Kristen Stucker were also all-tournament selections.

Austin Peay beat out UAB 3-0 in the first match on Saturday. Later in the afternoon, Gardner-Webb won a 3-1 match over UAB. Austin Peay placed second in the tournament, followed by Gardner-Web and UAB.

UTC hits the road Tuesday to face Kennesaw State in Kennesaw, Ga. at 6:30 p.m. (E.D.T). The Mocs then travel to Blacksburg, Va., for the Hokie Invitational Sept. 18 and 19, where they are set to play Liberty, Virginia Tech and Middle Tennessee.
