BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's indoor track and field team opened the 2016 season with five Top 10 finishes at the Emory Crossplex Invitational held at the Birmingham Crossplex Sunday.
Â
"This was about what I expected for our first meet of the year," Chattanooga head coach Bill Gautier said. "We trained too hard this week, and that's my fault, but the weather hasn't been ideal for training. It may have affected some of the girls in the Mile."
Â
Teghan Henderson (Pickering, Ontario) and Jessica York (Normandy, Tenn.) started the event off in the Mile Run. Henderson placed sixth in the unfamiliar event with a time of 5:03.72 and York was 10th overall and winning her heat in a time of 5:10.89.
Â
"Teghan had a good race, but probably wasn't prepared as well as she could have been, and again, that was my fault," Gautier said. "Jessie [York] ran a PR today. I'm really proud of her."
Â
Maddison Melchionna (Afton, Tenn.) ran a 59.13 in the 400 meter dash and senior Kiaana Howard (Nashville, Tenn.) finished in a time of 1:00.49.
Â
"Maddison's [Melchionna] time was pretty good for someone who is not a quarter-miler," Gautier said. "Kiaana [Howard] probably hasn't slept well the last few nights. She got back to Chattanooga in the middle of the night, but she's a senior and she wants to make every trip meaningful."
Â
Newcomers Madison Watson (Chattanooga, Tenn.), Haley Morris (Lenoir City, Tenn.) and Lily McKee (Knoxville, Tenn.) competed in the 800 meter run for the Mocs. Watson was 10th overall with a time of 2:27.20 with Morris next with a time of 2:30.26.
Â
"I'm very excited about what Madison [Watson] did today," Gautier said. "We wanted to get the young girls out on the track and get their feet wet. This is their first collegiate meet."
Â
"I'm glad everyone is here and we're getting back into our routine," Gautier said. "The last couple of weeks have been terrible for training, but now we have two weeks to get ready for the next meet."
Â
The Mocs will return to action on February 6 at the Middle Tennessee Invitational in Murfreesboro, Tenn. Results will be available at GoMocs.com following the event.
