Chattanooga Returns to the Tee Sunday Near Charleston

Maddy McDanel and the Chattanooga Mocs women’s golf team is back in action Sunday through Tuesday at the Cougar Classic.

CHATTANOOGA---The Chattanooga Mocs women's golf team is off to a good start this season. It gets the chance to build on it against a top field at the Cougar Classic.
Wins over Virginia, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, Baylor and Michigan State point to a young team finding its stride early.
"The emphasis for the first two tournaments has been entirely on us," coach Colette Murray said. "It hasn't been about anyone else in the field. We're going to keep it that way this week as well.
"We just need to continue to stay in our bubble and keep doing the things that we've been doing that's been successful."
Cristina Perez and Holly Morgan lead the Mocs in scoring average at 72.83 stroke per round. They're joined in the lineup by Megan Woods (73.67), Monica San Juan (73.83) and Maddy McDanel (75.67).
"We're comfortable with whatever five who qualify to play," Murray added. "Everyone's proven they can contribute and compete on tough golf courses."
Chattanooga enters the low country with a 292.17 stroke average. That's more than four shots better than last season's school-record 296.43. Morgan's four par or better cards through six rounds leads the team. All six Mocs have at least one such round this season.
Woods is averaging 70.00 shots per 18 in opening rounds, while Perez has proven to be a strong finisher posting 71.25 over the final 36 holes through two events. San Juan's average over her five counting cards is 73.20, and McDanel's last four rounds comes in at 73.75.
The competition doesn't get any easier this week. Fifteen of 21 teams come from power 5 conferences. All-in-all, eight of this week's opponents played in the 2016 NCAA Championships with 10 earning regionals entry.
Yeamans Hall is the host course. The par 72, 6,204-yard tract is in Hanahan, S.C., just outside Charleston. The three-day, 54-hole event starts Sunday and ends Tuesday. Click the links above for tournament notes, live scoring and pairings.
