NOTES
Â
AKRON, Ohio---The Chattanooga Mocs continued their forward progress finishing sixth at the Firestone Invitational on Firestone Country Club's North Course. The squad posted its first par or better total of the season shooting 1-under 863.
Â
"We were 7 under at one point today," coach
Mark Guhne said. "It's an under-par tournament on a good course. This really showed that we're closer to reaching the potential that I truly believe this team has."
Â
The final round 287 was led by senior
Brooks Thomas' 69 (-3).
Wes Gosselin added an even-par 72 with
Andrew Weathers and
Lake Johnson each turning in 73s.
Stuart Thomas' 77 was the drop tally.
Â
B. Thomas was sensational for the second straight week. He posted his first career top 5 tying for fifth at 211. It's also the first top 5 of the season by a Moc. Gosselin's 3-under 213 tied for 12th.
Â
"Brooks continues to reap the benefits of his work between tournaments," Guhne added. "We always knew what he was capable of, he's just starting to show it. Instead of one or two good rounds, he's putting together complete tournaments, and I could not be more proud of him."
Â
Cincinnati (850) got the win by three shots behind medalist Austin Squires (-11). Illinois State was second with an 11-under 853.
Â
As a team, the Mocs posted the second-best round of the day. The 863 total is 13 strokes better than the previous low of 876 shot in their prior event at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate.
Â
"Making progress," Guhne continued. "I felt we took a step forward in Arizona last time out and took another big one this week. We were close to doing something pretty special this week.
Â
"We'll get back to work and get ready for the next one in two weeks."
