CHATTANOOGA --- The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team picked up their third Southern Conference win in-a-row by sweeping Wofford (25-14, 25-18, 25-20) in Maclellan Gym on Friday as part of Alumni night.
The Mocs won the first two sets in convincing fashion and only trailed in four different points combined in those two sets. The third set saw Chattanooga fall behind 15-8 before taking 13 of the match's final 18 points leading to a 25-20 victory.
With the win, UTC improved to 10-7 overall, 3-1 in SoCon play and moved them into a tie with Furman atop the standings. The loss drops Wofford to 10-9 on the season while carrying a 3-2 mark in the league.
"I'm incredibly proud of our team against a tremendous Wofford team," said coach
Travis Filar. "That was one of, if not the most, complete matches we have played all year.
"It was awesome and I'm excited for the team as it was a big team win."
Chattanooga outperformed Wofford in all aspects, out-killing 35-31, out-digging 45-37, out-hitting .253-.036 and out-blocking 12.0-5.0. Holding the Terriers to a .036 attacking percentage was the lowest mark since a .016 mark against Cal State Fullerton on Aug. 28.
UTC made the difference at the net as
Emily Plumlee (Chesapeake, Va.) tallied up seven block assists, the most of any Moc on the season and a new career-high mark. She also added a single block solo.
Eden Murray (Hoschton, Ga.) added four block assists while
Kristy Wieser (Lincoln, Neb.) and
Dani Szczepanski (Cincinnati, Ohio) each chipped in with three block assists. Six different Mocs tallied at least one solo block or block assist.
Staying on the defensive side,
Rachel Petkosh (Merritt Island, Fla.) registered a team-high 11 digs as
Miranda Elpers (Louisville, Ky.) added ten digs on the night.
Elpers completed the kill-dig double-double by totaling ten kills to go along with the ten digs. Wieser finished the match with eight kills on a match-high .412 attacking percentage while
Allie Davenport (Tyrone, Ga.) had seven kills (.130) and Szczepanski added five (.375).
Lauren Greenspoon (Houston, Texas) dished out a match-high 20 assists and picked up eight digs while
Madison Bergren (Muncie, Ind.) finished with 11 assists and four digs.
Chattanooga looks to pick up their fourth conference win in as many tries tomorrow against Western Carolina.
"It's a quick turnaround but we've done it before (last weekend) … we're excited to be at home and we'll be ready to play another great opponent in Western Carolina."
