UTC Earns Fourth Straight SoCon Victory

Chattanooga took a four-set victory over Western Carolina to remain on top of the conference standings.
CHATTANOOGA – The Mocs volleyball team earned their fourth straight Southern Conference win on Saturday by defeating Western Carolina 3-1 (25-15, 20-25, 25-20, 25-23) in Maclellan Gym.
Chattanooga never trailed and coasted to a first set win, 25-15. The second set saw the Catamounts amass a 19-12 lead as they eventually went on to win 25-20. In the third set, WCU scored the match's first nine points and jumped out to a 12-2 lead. The Mocs answered by taking 12 of the next 13 points to take a 14-13 lead and went on to take the set 25-20. UTC took a 6-5 lead in the fourth set and held the lead throughout, notching the set and match win with a 25-23 victory.
For the second match in as many days, Chattanooga out-killed (56-46), out-attacked (.181-.121) and out-dug (85-75) the opposition. The 85 digs were the second most recorded on the season for the Mocs.
"It was a great weekend for us and I'm really proud of how this group is improving every time out on the court," said coach Travis Filar. "We struggled a bit in the second and third set, but our response when we were down in the third (12-2) was a total team effort.
"I couldn't be prouder of how we stayed together through a lot of adversity."
The defense paved the way for UTC as four different Mocs registered at least 14 kills in the win. Rachel Petkosh (Merritt Island, Fla.) led the team with 21 digs, Allie Davenport (Tyrone, Ga.) finished with 17, Miranda Elpers (Louisville, Ky.) with 16 and Lauren Greenspoon (Houston, Texas) posted 14 digs.
Blocking at the net was led by Emily Plumlee (Chesapeake, Va.) for the second straight match as she picked up four block assists while Kristy Wieser (Lincoln, Neb.) added three block assists.
On the attack, Wieser led the Mocs with 13 kills on a .229 hitting percentage while Elpers completed the kill-dig double-double adding 12 kills to her 16 digs. Plumlee (.467) and Davenport (.051) chipped in with nine kills each. Eden Murray (Hoschton, Ga.) finished with seven kills while hitting at a .200 clip.
Greenspoon led UTC with 24 assists and Madison Bergren (Muncie, Ind.) helped direct the offense with 19 assists.
Chattanooga returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 12, in Johnson City, Tenn., with a rematch against in-state rival ETSU. The Mocs beat the Buccaneers 3-1 on Sept. 30. Previews and media coverage will be available on GoMocs.com leading up to the match.
