Mocs Beat Bethune-Cookman, Akron

UTC faces Bethune-Cookman again Sunday at 10:00 a.m. to wrap up the first tournament of the season.

The Chattanooga Mocs softball team racked up two wins on the second day of the NTC Tournament in Clermont, Fla. UTC improves to 4-0 on the season.

"Wins are always good," head coach Frank Reed stated. "We're starting to do a little more on offense. It was good to see some players step up and see what we need to work on."

Chattanooga claimed a 2-1 win over Bethune-Cookman in the first game of the day.

In the second inning, freshman Katie Corum doubled to right field. UTC's bases were loaded when senior Sam Taylor singled to bring Corum home. Freshman Amanda Beltran followed with a score.

Iesha Waters was the only Wildcat to score.

Sophomore Cori Jennings pitched a full game and earned her second win from the circle.

The Mocs followed up with a 6-3 win against Akron.

Sophomore Kailey Palazzolo pitched for the first three innings, and freshman Jordan Fortel took the circle for the last four.

UTC started off quickly with scores from Taylor, Fortel, senior Criket Blanco and junior Jesslyn Stockard in the first inning.

Taylor was batted in by a single from Fortel, while Fortel advanced off Blanco's double. Then, Blanco and Stockard made it home after a double from Corum.

In the top of the fourth, the Zips got on the board with a score by Anna Tarpley followed by Kelly Hysong stealing home.

Chattanooga answered with scores from junior Katy Richardson and Taylor, bringing the score to 6-2.

Akron's last run came in the top of the fifth by Cassie Gillespie.

"We had some kids that stepped up," Reed shared. "We played a lot of different people today, and we're not dropping off. We have a lot of different types of players."

The Mocs face Bethune-Cookman again Sunday at 10:00 a.m. to wrap up the first tournament of the season.
