The Chattanooga Mocs beat Northern Kentucky 8-2 to wrap up the Frost Classic presented by Ruby Falls. UTC goes 3-2 on the weekend moving to 11-5 on the season.
"I think we had a lot of progress throughout the tournament," head coach
Frank Reed stated. "Today and yesterday we played pretty solid softball."
Chattanooga came out strong offensively posting six runs in the first inning and two in the second.
"It's fun to see them hitting and running," Reed said. "I always like to wave my arm when they're on third to send them home. It means we're putting the ball in play and that we're hitting some gaps. It means people are running and taking extra bases."
Over the first two innings, freshman
Jordan Fortel posted two runs and two hits. Senior
Sam Taylor and junior
Jesslyn Stockard scored two hits and one run each.
Fortel started it with a double to right center, bringing Taylor home. Sophomore
Ashley Conner walked with loaded bases, giving Fortel a run.
Stockard singled up the middle, which brought seniors
Criket Blanco and
Anyssa Robles home.
Taylor hit a single, and Stockard and Conner scored to wrap up the first inning.
In the second, Fortel scored off a single by Stockard. Sophomore
J.J. Hamill then made it home as a pinch runner for Robles.
The Norse got on the board in the fourth inning with a run by Zahrya McFarland. Dani Devlin hit a home run in the seventh to earn Northern Kentucky's final run.
Sophomore
Kailey Palazzolo tossed a complete game improving to 4-2 from the circle.
"Next weekend we need to be consistent and be more aggressive at the plate like we were this weekend," shared Reed. "It doesn't get any easier from here on out. We have to continue to get better."
The Mocs travel to Starkville, Miss., for the Bulldog Slamboree March 4-6. UTC faces Western Kentucky, Mississippi State, Longwood, Northwestern State and Central Arkansas.
