Mocs Hit Three Home Runs to Beat Tennessee Tech 6-2

UTC tied a season-best with three home runs against the Golden Eagles.

The Chattanooga Mocs softball team beat Tennessee Tech 6-2 in Cookeville, Tenn., on Monday. UTC tied a season-best with three home runs after hitting 13 hits compared to the Golden Eagle's six.

"It's good to come back out there after a little break and get the offense that we had," head coach Frank Reed stated. "It was a complete game. Hopefully we can find another win this week before going into play Mercer this weekend."

Chattanooga is 23-21 and 4-5 in Southern Conference play.

With two outs in the first inning, senior Criket Blanco got the Mocs offense started off a double to left center. Senior Anyssa Robles batted her in off a single up the middle, giving UTC an early 1-0 lead.

Tennessee Tech put together two runs in the second after hitting two singles in a row.

Blanco hit her third home run of the season to tie the game up 2-2 in the third.

The next three innings were scoreless.

To start the fifth inning, senior Amanda Ross doubled to right center. After one out, sophomore Alyssa Coppinger followed with a single, while Blanco walked to load the bases. However, Tennessee Tech's right fielder Olivia Bennett made two putouts in a row to end the inning.

In the top of the seventh, Coppinger singled down the third base line. Blanco batted Coppinger in with her second home run of the game, giving the Mocs a 4-2 lead. Then, Jordan Fortel hit a two-run homer, batting in sophomore Ashley Conner.

"It's always fun when you win like that," shared Reed. "I feel good about the win."

Sophomore Cori Jennings tossed a complete game, earning her 11th win and fanning four strikeouts.

"Cori did a nice job and pitched her way out of some jams," Reed said. "We got key pitches when we needed them."

Chattanooga returns home to face Tennessee State Wednesday, April 20 at 6:00 p.m. (E.D.T.) in Frost Stadium.

Tickets for individual games in Frost Stadium are $5 for adults and $3 for youth. UTC students are admitted free with a valid Mocs Card.
