The Chattanooga Mocs softball team fell to Samford 10-0 and 7-6 in Birmingham, Ala., on Saturday. UTC is 19-18 and 2-3 in Southern Conference play.
The Bulldogs got off to a strong offensive start in the opening game of the series, scoring four runs in the first, five in the third and one in the fourth.
Sophomore
Ashley Conner singled to right field in the second inning, while senior
Alyssa Taylor had a hit through the left side in the third.
Freshman
Katie Corum led the squad with six putouts at first base. Senior
Criket Blanco tallied a team-best four assists paired with two putouts.
Sophomore
Cori Jennings pitched the first 2.2 innings. Sophomore
Kailey Palazzolo came in for the remainder of the game.
In the second game of the day, Chattanooga got off to a solid start.
Senior
Sam Taylor singled to second base in the third inning.
Alyssa Taylor followed with a hit off a bunt. Then, Blanco walked to load the bases.
Conner singled up the middle, bringing
Sam Taylor and
Alyssa Taylor home to give UTC a 2-0 lead.
Samford's Grey Adams walked Corum and freshman
Amanda Beltran back-to-back, leading Blanco to score the third run for the Mocs.
Conner made it home off a single by freshman
Alyssa Coppinger for Chattanooga's final run of the third inning.
After four singles, the Bulldogs scored three runs in the bottom of the third.
Blanco got the fifth frame started with a double to left center. She was then batted in off a sacrifice fly from Palazzolo, extending the Mocs lead to 5-3.
Samford tied the game up 5-5 after two runs in the sixth.
In the top of the eighth inning, Coppinger knocked out her first career home run.
However, the Bulldogs had an answer once again with two runs in the bottom of the eighth to clinch the win.
Freshman
Jordan Fortel tossed a complete game, fanning four, while Samford's pitching staff only had one strikeout.
UTC wraps up its series with the Bulldogs Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
