The Chattanooga Mocs softball team beat UAB 3-0 in Birmingham, Ala., for its second shutout in a row. UTC improves to 27-22, finishing off non-conference play.
"It was a good midweek win," head coach
Frank Reed stated. "I'm really proud of our team. We had a lot of positive things come out of today."
To start off the second inning, freshman
Jordan Fortel hit her 11th double of the season. Senior
Amanda Ross batted her in off a double to right center, giving the Mocs a 1-0 lead.
Sophomore
Ashley Conner and senior
Criket Blanco put together a double play to end the fourth inning, keeping the Blazers off the board.
In the top of the seventh with two outs, junior
Jesslyn Stockard stepped in as a pinch hitter and knocked out a two-run homer.
"We were watching Jesslyn in practice and thought she had been swinging pretty well," commented Reed. "It was perfect. I knew she was going to hit it hard somewhere. It just came at the right time."
The Blazers loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but UAB grounded out to Blanco.
Sophomore
Cori Jennings tossed an entire game, earning her 13th win from the circle and second shutout in a row.
Freshman
Katie Corum led the squad with 10 putouts, while Blanco boasted a team-best seven assists.
Chattanooga heads to UNCG at 6-6 in the SoCon this weekend for a doubleheader Saturday, April 30 at 1:00 p.m. (E.D.T.) and a lone game Sunday, May 1 at 1:30 p.m.
