The Chattanooga Mocs softball team's season ended after battling through its two games on the third day of the Southern Conference Championship, beating ETSU 6-3 before dropping a 9-6 contest to Furman. UTC finishes the year 30-29 and 7-11 in conference play.

Chattanooga started the day with a rematch against the Bucs. ETSU won the series 2-1 in the regular season finale last weekend in Frost Stadium.

"It was good to get a comeback win like this," head coach Frank Reed stated. "I feel like we threw it all out there. We hung in there and played tough. Cori had some good innings for us."

The Bucs scored one run in the first inning with Kelsey Smith hitting a RBI single. After ETSU loaded the bases, sophomore Cori Jennings tossed her second strikeout to end the frame.

Sophomore Ashley Conner singled to right field for UTC's first hit of the game in the top of the second.

In the fourth, senior Criket Blanco and freshman Amanda Beltran hit back-to-back singles. Senior Anyssa Robles stepped up next, knocking out a three-run homer to give the Mocs their first lead of the game 3-1.

"Anyssa has so much power to be able to do that," commented Reed. "We were excited for her to come through with that. What can you say, she comes to play every day."

The Bucs advanced runners to second and third with one out in the bottom of the fifth. However, ETSU's Smith popped up to senior Alyssa Taylor. Then, senior Amanda Ross ended the inning with an impressive catch in foul territory.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Bucs tied the game by scoring two runs after three hits in a row and two batters being walked.

Freshman Katie Corum scored off a wild pitch in the top of the seventh for the go-ahead run. Blanco hit a two-RBI single, bringing Alyssa Taylor and Ross home.

Jennings finished the game with five strikeouts.

In the second game of the day, Furman scored six runs in the bottom of the first, including a grand slam from Candace Johnson.

Beltran had the first hit for the Mocs with a double in the top of the second. Freshman Jordan Fortel followed with a sacrifice fly, batting Robles in to get UTC on the board.

The Paladins added a run in both the second and third innings.

Chattanooga fought its way back in the top of the fifth. Robles doubled to left center, bringing senior Sam Taylor and Conner home. Beltran followed with a double, while freshman Halie Williamson scored as a pinch runner for Robles.

Fortel blasted a two-run homer to bring Chattanooga within two runs of Furman 8-6.

A half inning later, the Paladins put up one run.

Following the game, Furman moved on to face Mercer. No. 1 seeded Samford plays the winner on Saturday.
