OMAHA, Neb. -- The Chattanooga volleyball team suffered two defeats on Saturday as part of the Bluejay Invitational hosted by Creighton University.
The first match was a 3-0 sweep from the hands of TCU as the Horned Frogs captured all three sets by scores of 25-12, 25-12 and 26-24. TCU ended the third set on a 13-4 run as UTC held a 20-13 lead before dropping the match.
The loss dropped the Mocs to a 5-4 overall record before they played Creighton later in the day. TCU improved to 5-2 with the win.
Sophomore
Miranda Elpers (Louisville, Ky.) led the offense with a team-high in both kills (9) and hitting percentage (.273).
Kristy Wieser (Lincoln, Neb.) added five kills on a .214 hitting percentage while freshman
Brianna Anderson (Austin, Texas) also added five kills in the loss.
Junior setter
Madison Bergren (Muncie, Ind.) directed the offense with a team-high 18 assists. Another junior setter in
Lauren Greenspoon (Houston, Texas) dished out six assists, marking her 2,000
th career assist, leaving her fifth all-time in program history.
Elpers and
Rachel Petkosh (Merritt Island, Fla.) paced the defense with 13 and 11 digs, respectively. The Mocs were out-blocked 12.5-3.0 against the Horned Frogs.
In the second match of the day, the Mocs suffered a 3-0 defeat to tournament-host Creighton in the final game of the Invitational. The Bluejays won all three sets by scores of 25-14, 25-19 and 00-00.
With the loss, UTC falls to .500 at a 5-5 record on the season. Creighton improves to 4-4 this year.
The Bluejays attacked at a .371 percentage against the Mocs .102 hitting percentage and also had the heavy advantage in kills 45-27.
Wieser, who was named to the Bluejay Invitational All-Tournament Team, and
Allie Davenport (Tyrone, Ga.) led UTC with eight kills each. Wieser finished with a .286 hitting percentage while Davenport posted a .053 percentage. Anderson registered five kills for the second straight match while hitting at a .214 clip.
Seven different Mocs collected at least one kill in the loss including freshman
Dani Szczepanski (Cincinnati, Ohio) who finished with three kills on a .286 percentage. Directing the offense was Bergren who collected 23 assists and a kill. Defensively, Petkosh registered nine digs and freshman
Bailey Clemons (Nashville, Tenn.) added eight digs.
The Mocs will be back in action next weekend in Maclellan Gym as they host the Scenic City Showdown – presented by Hampton Inn & Suites (Downtown Chattanooga) – Sept. 16-17. In addition to UTC, Appalachian State, Tennessee State and Ole Miss will also be participating.
