NOTES
Â
ROCKY FACE, Ga.---The Chattanooga Mocs finished 13th at the Carpet Capital Collegiate. The Mocs shot 890 which was 10 strokes better than Memphis in 14th. Despite a disappointing result, coach
Mark Guhne sees progress.
Â
"We are much farther along at this point than last year," he shared. "We had one guy playing well here last year, but right now, I think we have three guys in good shape. We just need to expand that by a couple of guys.
Â
"The good news is there is time (just two tournaments into the season), and I think we have the guys here to get it done. We need to get everyone playing the way they're capable of playing golf."
Â
Wes Gosselin and
Brooks Thomas each turned in one-under par 71s today.
Andrew Weathers had a 74, while
Lake Johnson shot 76 for the 292 providing an 890 total.
Â
Gosselin tied for 30th at +2 (218). Weathers tied for 49th at +6 with Johnson (+8) and Thomas (+10) close behind.
Â
"We gave away a lot of shots on the green," Guhne continued. "We aren't making the putts we have to make, but that can be corrected in practice.
Â
"I was encouraged that our course management is getting better. We cut the double bogeys down to one today. We'll keep working and getting better every day."
Â
Virginia pulled away with the title Sunday afternoon posting a tournament-record 31-under par 833. Auburn (839) and Clemson (848) were second and third. Georgia Tech's Luke Schneiderjans won medalist playing as an individual. His 11-under 205 was one better than the trio of Phillip Knowles (North Florida), Ryan Benton (Auburn) and Derek Bard (Virginia).
Â
The Mocs have two weeks off before returning to the tee. Next up is the Maui Jim Intercollegiate September 23-25 in Scottsdale, Ariz.
