DAYTON, OHIO (Sept.2) -- The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team suffered its first defeat of the season with a 3-0 loss to Northwestern in the first day of the Dayton Invitational on Friday afternoon.
The Wildcats took a 2-0 lead by winning the first set 25-11 and the second set by a 25-17 score. NU captured the win with a 25-20 victory in the third set.
With the loss, UTC drops to 4-1 on the year and an 11-match non-conference win streak was snapped. Northwestern improves to 4-0 with the win.
"When you play against a great opponent like Northwestern, and the next two matches in Xavier and Dayton, we have to control our side and do what makes us great consistenly, and I don't think we did that today" said coach
Travis Filar after the match.
The Mocs entered the match with a .309 hitting percentage as a team, which was 18
th best in the NCAA, but were limited to a .104 percentage by Northwestern.
Senior
Allie Davenport (Tyrone, Ga.) led UTC with eight kills while finishing with a .091 hitting percentage. Classmate
Kristy Wieser (Lincoln, Neb.) hit at a team-best .357 clip and collected six kills in the loss.
Freshman
Dani Szczepanski (Cincinnati, Ohio) continued her excellent play on both offense and defense by registering seven kills and two block assists. Junior
Lauren Greenspoon (Houston, Texas) dished out 23 assists to lead the Mocs while adding eight digs on the day.
"Moving forward to tomorrow our focus has to be and will be, to compete harder and smarter, be more disciniplined and to control what we control consistently," added Filar.
The Mocs will be back in action tomorrow in the Dayton Invitational with the first match at 10 a.m. against Xavier and then will finish the tournament against the host Dayton Flyers at 7 p.m. LIVE STATS will be available on GoMocs.com and you can watch the Dayton match LIVE
