Mocs Complete Day 1 at MTSU

Freshman Max Grobbelaar wins in his collegiate debut.
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga started off its fall campaign at the Dale Short Shootout presented by Jason's Deli in Murfreesboro, Tenn. Freshman Max Grobbelaar opened his collegiate career with a tough three-set win.
UTC played three doubles and six singles against host MTSU. Grobbelaar's victory was the lone bright spot for the Mocs, but others competed well.
"Austin Boaz played really well today and it was good to see him performing at a high level after missing a full year with a back injury," stated head coach Carlos Garcia. "Derrick Brown was also solid and he and Austin competed in a tough doubles match."
Grobbelaar, a native of Johannesburg, South Africa, took on Michael Apple and won the opening set 6-2. Apple struck back in the second with a 6-4 win. Trailing 5-6 and 6-7 in the breaker, Grobbelaar won the last three points to take the match.
"Max pulled out a marathon that went the distance and I'm proud of how he handled the pressure," added Garcia. "His win is the momentum we need going into tomorrow's matches."
"All in all, I thought we fought hard today against a very good MTSU team. I am proud of how we competed today, and there were a lot of positives to take into the weekend."
