Â
ATHENS, Ga.---The Chattanooga Mocs men's golf team posted its best finish of the season considering the field ending up sixth at the Southern Intercollegiate. The 1-over par 577 was three better than No. 19 Georgia in the host's event at Athens Country Club.
Â
Three top 25 teams dotted the field with six ranked in the top 44 in the nation. Lipscomb claimed the win at 12 under, three ahead of Florida State. No. 24 Arkansas was third at 5 under. Kennesaw State's Jake Fendt won medalist honors shooting 7 under.
Â
Sophomore
Etienne Brault led the way tying for 12th at 2 under. That was one better than junior
Phillip Hickam tied for 16th firing 1 under.
Brooks Thomas tied for 25th at +2.
Stuart Thomas (148) and
Lake Johnson (159) rounded out the team scoring, while
Andrew Weathers (150) played as an individual.
Â
It was a quick start for the Mocs. Playing together as a five-some in the unique format, they started 4 under on the par 5 sixth, the opening hole in a shotgun start.
Â
They were 1 over with just four holes left before stumbling with four bogey and a triple to drop back to ninth-place with a 295 (+7). Another good start for the Mocs had the squad at 4 under through nine holes. They improved two more shots for the 6-under 282 in round two.
Â
It was an exceptionally strong showing considering the Mocs' top player is in California. Senior
Wes Gosselin is preparing for qualifying school for the Mackenzie Tour (PGA Canada) March 14-17 in Santee.
Â
Quotable
"What a great effort. To play this well, without Wes, I could not be prouder. We keep getting better…competing better. That needs to continue, but I'm really excited with where we are heading."  – Coach
Mark Guhne.
