The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team wrapped up competition at the 2017 NCAA Wrestling Championships today. Junior Bryce Carr lost in overtime in his consolation match against Rutgers' Nicholas Gravina.Â
Carr, a junior transfer from Albany, Ga., ends his first season with the Mocs with a 26-6 overall record. All six of his losses were to NCAA Tournament participants in overtime or by one point.Â
Today's match was just like the other setbacks, a battle to the end that took extra time to decide. Carr was the aggressor early with a takedown at the first period buzzer.Â
He deferred in the second and Gravina took down, cutting the lead to 2-1 20 seconds into the second frame. Carr was then granted a penalty point after repeated hands to the face by Gravina.Â
Halfway through the second, Carr got in on a shot, but Gravina fought it off. Carr was then given a stalling warning before the end of the second.
Leading 3-1, Carr chose down in the third. Early in the final period, Carr was called for stalling on bottom and Gravina cut the lead to 3-2. Carr was unable to escape and Gravina's riding time tied the score at 3-3.Â
Carr got a single-leg midway through the first overtime, but could not get control as they fell out of bounds. Both escaped in the tiebreakers, sending it to another sudden victory.Â
Carr got caught on his back in a scramble in the fourth OT and gave up a fall.
"Byrce had another tough battle today," said UTC head coach Heath Eslinger. "He had a great year and learned a lot at the NCAAs. He is a true competitor and he will evaluate and grow from this experience."
