Â
GREENVILLE---The Chattanooga Mocs men's golf team finished tied for third at the Furman Intercollegiate. They did so behind senior
Wes Gosselin's runner-up performance.
Â
Gosselin shot a career-best 10-under 206. It's the eighth time a Moc has finished 10-under or better, the first since Stephan Jaeger's school-record 203 (-13) winning the 2012 NCAA Bowling Green Regional
Â
That led the Mocs to a 9-under 855 total, the best of 2016-17. UTC entered the day at 7 under shooting 286 over the final 18. Gosselin led with a 68 (-4), while
Etienne Brault contributed 72 with
Brooks Thomas and
Stuart Thomas each carding 73.
Â
Gosselin and Clemson playing partner Carson Young started the day tied for fourth at 6 under, five shots off Wofford's Andrew Novak at 11 under. Gosselin opened with three straight birdies and reached 10 under with another on the par 5 sixth.
Â
Three straight bogeys for Novak tied the duo at -10 before Gosselin's fifth birdie of the day on 10 gave him the lead at 11 under. They were through 13 with Gosselin ahead of Novak by one and two clear of Young.
Â
A double by Novak on 17, his 14th hole of the shotgun start put him behind the dueling duo of Gosselin and Young. The pair had matching bogeys on 14 before Young's eagle on 15 knotted them at 10 under, with Novak one behind at -9.
Â
Gosselin re-took the lead with a birdie on the par three 16th. The dangerous 17th loomed. Young birdied, while Gosselin's approach found the bunker leading to a bogey. The two-shot swing gave Young the lead. They parred 18 with Novak's birdie on two tying him with Gosselin in second.
Â
That doesn't diminish what the Mocs accomplished as a unit this weekend. The tie for third with Georgia Southern at 9 under included 12 under over the final 36 holes. All eight UTC student-athletes entered turned in at least one par or better card.
Â
Gosselin was followed by B. Thomas at level-par 216. Brault and S. Thomas each finished 1 over, while
Phillip Hickam had a 228 total to round out the starting lineup.
Â
Andrew Weathers tied for 14th playing as an individual. He turned in consistent cards of 73, 70 and 71 for the 2-under 214.
Lake Johnson (222) and
Will Porter (225) also participated in the event.
Â
No. 17 Clemson ran away with the title at 29-under 835. USC Aiken was second at 849 followed by the Mocs and Eagles at 855. Wofford was fifth at 861. Eight of the 21 teams entered shot par or better for the 54 holes.
Â
Notable
24 under on the par 5s is the team's best performance on the scoring holes since 26 under in the 2011 AutoTrader.com Collegiate. Click the notes link above for more facts and stats.

Quotable
"Wes is playing really well right now. He's managing his game at a very high level. He was really solid all day long. We played the last 36 holes 12 under after an average start Friday. They fought to the end. It's great to be in the position we were in today, playing for the leaderboard…it helps prepares us for the post season." – Coach
Mark Guhne.
