Game 1 Recap | Samford 4, Chattanooga 3
The Mocs took the early lead in the bottom of the second when
Brook Womack belted a solo homerun to deep left-center field, giving UTC a quick 1-0 advantage. Chattanooga allowed two unearned runs to Samford in the top of the third by way of two fielding errors and gave the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead. Samford tacked on two more runs in the top of the fourth on a two-run homerun to extend a 4-1 lead.
Womack kept the Mocs alive in the bottom of the fifth, smacking her second solo homerun of the game and cut the deficit to 4-2. Chattanooga plated another run in the bottom half of the sixth when
J.J. Hamill singled in
Hayleigh Weissenbach, who reached on a walk, with no outs and cut the deficit to a single run at 4-3. With Hamill on second and no outs, the Mocs failed to bring her in after a pair of fly outs and a ground out ended the inning. Samford closed the door in the seventh, but was threatened as an
Amanda Beltran fly ball to center field with a runner on was hauled in at the fence.
Celie Hudson (2-2) took the loss in the circle but tossed a quality game as she went all 7.0 innings and allowed five hits, four runs (two earned) while striking out a career-high seven and issuing only two walks.
Chattanooga only recorded four hits in the loss as Womack led the offense with a 2-for-3 performance, notching two homeruns and two RBIs. Hamill went 1-for-3 with an RBI and
Aly Walker picked up the other hit, a double, in a 1-for-3 game at the plate.
Game 2 Recap | Samford 5, Chattanooga 0
Samford plated three runs in the top of the second on a pair of homeruns, a two-run and solo shot, as it would be all the runs they needed. The Mocs posed a threat in the bottom of the third when they put runners at first and second on back-to-back singles from
Halie Williamson and Weissenbach with one out. The threat was quickly thwarted when a 5-3 double play ended the inning and kept the score at a 3-0 Samford edge.
The Bulldogs pushed across two insurance runs in the top of the sixth, both on RBI singles, and extended their lead to 5-0. Chattanooga wouldn't have a response in the final two frames as they were set down in order in both innings.
Alex Connell (1-10) suffered the loss as the starting pitcher, going 2.0 innings while allowing three hits and three runs (all earned).
Maddy Adams provided steady relief out of the bullpen, throwing 5.0 innings while allowing only four hits and two runs (both earned).
The Mocs, for a second-straight game, only had four hits in the loss. Weissenbach led the offense with a pair of singles, going 2-for-3 in game two. Walker and Williamson both finished 1-for-2 to round out the four hits.
