PINEHURST, N.C.---There's an old sports adage that goes "it's not how you start, it's how you finish". The Chattanooga Mocs men's golf team is trying to prove it at the Southern Conference Championships on Pinehurst No. 9.
Â
The Mocs shot 20-over par 308 over the initial 18 holes, but bounced back with a 2-over 290, the low round of the day. It puts them in a tied for second with UNCG, six shots behind ETSU at 592.
Â
Senior
Wes Gosselin is in second-place with a 1-over 145. He turned in 73 and 72 to sit one shot behind the Bucs' Geuntae Kim at E after a hole-in-one on 17 in round two.
Â
Gosselin's not alone in the top 10.
Etienne Brault is tied for fifth at 4 over. He responded from an opening 78 by firing 2-under 70 in round two. It was the low round of the tournament.
Â
Brooks Thomas is tied for ninth, two behind Brault at plus 6. He turned in 76 and 74 over his 36 today.

Notable
- 308 is the highest score of the season.
- 18 birdies in round two ties the season high set twice before…the prior two times came in final rounds at Turning Stone and Furman…Gosselin's nine on the day leads the tourney with B. Thomas, S. Thomas and Brault tied for second with three others by notching seven.
- Gosselin is shooting for his second win of the season, third career…he would be the fourth Moc to record a multi-win season joining Bryce Ledford (2, 2004-05), Jonathan Hodge (3, 2007-08) and Stephan Jaeger (3, 2011-12).
- Brault's second round 70 marked the third time in the last four cards he's led or tied for the team lead.
- The 18-shot improvement from round to round is the best for the Mocs in SoCon Championships play since 19 (315-296) in the 1984 final 18…Eric Landfried's 70 was the low round of the tourney for a UTC student-athlete as he finished tied for fifth.

Quotable
Mark Guhne on…
Tough Start:
"I felt like a couple of them were kind of tight, trying to do too much, and couldn't get out of their own way for awhile. It just kind of snow-balled. I just tried to stay positive with the guys. We kept talking about hitting good shots and making pars. It was a really rough start today. I know how bad these guys want this…sometimes when you want something that bad, you get in your own way."
Â
Strong Afternoon 18:
"That's something we've done all semester. We've had bad starts, but the guys have always fought back really well. Today was a prime example. That 2 over this afternoon was huge considering the conditions. It got us back in the golf tournament and gives them a lot of confidence going into the last day. I could not be prouder of the way they fought back. There's been no 'give up' in this group all year."
