CHATTANOOGA --- A pair of tough, one-run losses on the second day of the Southern Conference Tournament, eliminated the Chattanooga Mocs from championship contention and concluded the 2017 season.

After dropping a pitchers dual against #3 ETSU, 1-0, during the first game on Thursday, Chattanooga rallied for six runs in the final three innings against #4 Samford, but fell short 9-8.

The Mocs finish the season with a 15-38 overall record while carrying a 5-16 mark against Southern Conference opponents.

Game 1 Recap | #3 ETSU 1, #7 Chattanooga 0
The game's only run would be scored in the top of the first when ETSU's Tiffany Laughren singled to the hole between short and third, giving ETSU an early 1-0 lead.

The Mocs were held without a hit through five and a third innings before Aly Walker singled to left field, advancing Amy Lewis to third to put runners on the corners with one out. Ashley Conner followed that up with a fly ball to right field, deep enough to score Lewis from third and tie things up at 1-1. ETSU would quickly appeal the call of the sacrifice fly as the umpires ruled that Lewis left the bag early, resulting in an inning-ending double play and no run on the board.

Chattanooga couldn't put together a rally in the seventh and dropped a tough 1-0 decision, falling to an elimination game against #4 Samford at 8 p.m.

Celie Hudson (6-10) suffered the loss, but threw a gem of a game, going the distance while allowing only three hits, one run and adding three strikeouts. Hudson allowed two hits in the first inning and didn't allow another hit until the seventh.

The Mocs only hit of the game was from Walker, as she went 1-for-2 with a walk. Lewis and Halie Williamson reached on walks and Hayleigh Weissenbach reached on an error, the only Mocs base runners all day.

Game 2 Recap | #4 Samford 9, #7 Chattanooga 8
After a scoreless two innings, Samford plated three runs in the top of the third on three hits and were helped out by one Mocs error. A pair of RBI singles and a fielder's choice were the cause of the three runs while a double play ended Samford's threat with a 3-0 score.

The Mocs answered in the home half of the third when singles from Emma Sturdivant and J.J. Hamill allowed Amy Lewis to advance them to second and third with two outs. Hayleigh Weissenbach delivered a two-out, two-RBI single to right field, cutting the deficit to 3-2.

Samford would bring home two more runs in the fourth on a two-run homerun to extend their lead to 5-2. After holding the Mocs in the home half, the Bulldogs erupted for four runs to take a large 9-2 lead. Chattanooga would answer right back in the bottom half when Ashley Conner belted a two-out grand slam, cutting into Samford's lead at 9-6.

The Mocs would add another run in the bottom of the sixth on a Hamill RBI double to the right-center gap, inching closer at 9-7, and putting the tying runs on second and third with one out. A strikeout and hard line-out off the bat of Weissenbach ended the Chattanooga threat. Conner didn't allow the Mocs to go down quietly as she belted her second homerun of the game, a solo shot with one out in the seventh to pull within 9-8, but the offense couldn't push across a run in the final two outs and dropped its elimination game.

Celie Hudson (6-10) started her second game in a span of just over five hours and suffered the loss as she threw 4.1 innings, surrendering six hits and nine runs (six earned) while striking out two. Maddy Adams added 2.2 innings of stellar relief by allowing only one hit while registering a strikeout against 13 batters faced.

The Chattanooga offense, after being limited to one hit in loss to ETSU, belted 12 hits, three of which went for extra bases. Conner went 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs and a career-high five RBI. Hamill added a 3-for-3 performance with a double and RBI. Sturdivant registered two singles in three trips to plate while Weissenbach, Walker and Katy Richardson all went 1-for-4 with singles. Amy Lewis added a single and went 1-for-3.
