CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's soccer team fell 2-0 to Morehead State on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Finley Stadium. Chattanooga is now 1-3-2 overall and the Eagles improve to 1-4.
Â
"We came out really flat," Chattanooga head coach
Gavin McKinney said. "Maybe a bit of heavy legs from Friday, our double overtime game. It was a battle. We really came out a bit lethargic and got punished in the first three minutes because of it."
Â
That punishment came on a goal scored by Ashley Ritchie with just 2:24 gone in the match. Ritchie took a pass from Samanta Damante and slotted in a shot past Chattanooga keeper
Bailey Coppedge (), into the lower right corner for what would prove to be the game winner.
Â
The Mocs' defense stepped up after that and held off the Eagles the rest of the half and most of the second. UTC outshot Morehead State 16-11 with a 13-7 shots on goal advantage.
Â
"The second half we actually had a bit of life from us," McKinney said. "We had most of the ball and created some good chances, but we didn't take any chances. We have to somehow gain a killer instinct and take a game from the start."
Â
The Eagles second goal came in the final seven minutes of the match. Cara Maher's corner kick from the left side found the top right corner of the goal, scraping the cross bar and getting over the Mocs' defense to make it 2-0 at the 83:25 mark of the game.
Â
"We lack a little bit of winning mentality," McKinney said. "Somehow we've got to change that. We've got a lot of time to change it. We have it within us. We believe in the group. We've just got to perform better."
Â
Coppedge made five save in the net for Chattanooga in her second start this season. Michelle Washburn picked up the Eagles' first win of the year with 13 saves.
Â
The Mocs will travel to Alabama A&M this Friday night to begin a six-game road swing. Friday's match is set to kick off at 5:00 p.m. Eastern time in Huntsville, Ala. Follow the action online at GoMocs.com.
