CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's and women's cross country teams head out this week for the NCAA South Region Championships hosted by Florida State at the Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Fla.
Â
"We are looking for a good showing from our women's team," Chattanooga head coach Andy Meyer said. "This is the fastest 6-kilometer course we will run."
Â
The course is a combination of grass fields and dirt roads throughout the park. The women will circle the course twice ending in a 600-meter downhill finish.
Â
"The ladies have done well all year and continue to amaze me with their continued hard work and dedication to our season goals," Meyer said. "Everyone continues to be healthy and relatively injury free so we are excited about our potential finish placing."
Â
Meyer will take along his top seven runners who claimed second for the Mocs at the Southern Conference Championships last month. All-Conference performers Emily Poole and Makenzie Jones will lead a veteran crew. They are joined by Kenneday Thomson, Hannah Caldwell, Brianna Nelson, Sophia Neglia and Nicole Buerhle.
Â
The men have continued their training and improvement. They will run a 10-kilometer race that rounds the outer loop twice then shifts to two laps around a shorter inner loop before a sprint to the finish.
Â
"The guys have trained well since conference and we are looking for fast 10K times as this is a very fast 10K course," Meyer said. "We have a couple of injuries that have improved and the guys will race to the very best of their potential."
Â
Chattanooga's top SoCon finisher Nathan Watson, along with Mark Britt will lead a crew of six runners. Freshman Jonanthan Boyd, a member of the SoCon All-Freshman Team, continues his climb and will be joined in the race by Ryan Phillips, Micah Sneller and Josh Topham.
Â
The women's 6K race will begin at 8:30 a.m. followed by the men's 10K an hour later. Progress of the runners will be available throughout the race with running team scoring at the 3K, 5K and 8K splits along with individual standings at those points. Final results will be posted to GoMocs.com once they are available.
Â
Live streaming will be available on ESPN3 with commentary by Mike Caldwell. Links for both scoring and video streaming can be found online at GoMocs.com.
