Chattanooga Basketball Postgame Quotes

Katie Burrows, Head Coach
Opening statement after 67-51 loss.
"Same story, different day. We did not value the ball. I asked them one day, 'what's the object of the game?' The object of the game is the ball. It's the most important object on the floor and we don't value it enough. We put stipulations and make goals in practice to make better decisions. Then we get on the floor against someone who doesn't care about us and they turn the heat up. This is the result, 16 turnovers. We did rebound well, thankfully. We could have capitalized on possessions more. That's the story of this game."
Â
On creating a score and stop mentality.
"The things we do in practice, we talk about score and stop. In that order. Score and stop. We have drills designed for that, you don't get any points until you score and stop, in that order. They got hot, but you let them hit a couple and they start feeling it and we don't tighten up. We don't make adjustments, period. And then they get better looks and score at will. They moved the ball better than we did. For some reason we didn't keep patience with the ball and move it around to get good, quality looks. Consistently, after that first quarter, we started to get selfish with it and didn't make that extra pass."

On what the coaching staff will focus on moving forward.
"I just asked them. Point blank. 'How can I coach you?' 'How can I make you better?' I make them tell me things that I obviously want to hear, but hopefully, they believe it. They aren't naive. They know what our issues are. It's just a matter of them coming together and rallying around one another. I told them I'm going to work every day to make you better. Our staff is going to do everything possible to make them better. We have a great staff. We go and break down film and give them everything we have. WE just hope the next game everything clicks, and when it does, I think they're really going to enjoy it."
Shelbie Davenport, R-Sr.-F
On what went wrong after building early lead.
"We kind of just spoke on this a bit. I think we relaxed and got comfortable when we had a little lead, I think we got it up to eight. We can't have an off and on button right now. I think we are slowly but surely figuring that out. We can't turn that off and we need to learn to keep the pedal to the metal at all times."
On need to create more of a team-oriented offense.
"I think later in the game when we were down, we stopped being as team-oriented. I think we got in the score now mode. I don't know how many assists we had in the first and fourth, but I think we had a lot more in the first than the fourth. We have to continue to lean on each other. We can't win when only one person is touching the ball in a possession."
Eboni Williams, Fr.-F
On what can improve in individual play.
"My biggest thing is that I need to slow down. They continuously tell me that and it's a work in progress. I just have to keep working at that."
On what needs to improve as a team moving forward.
"I feel like all of us need to get in the gym and work on what they are saying. I think right now some of us are trying to do certain things in practice, but we're not taking the time to do it on our own."
