Women’s Golf Finishes Strong Tying for 3rd at Moon Golf Invite

Holly Morgan led the Chattanooga Mocs to their second-best round of 2017-18 with a 2-under 70 in the final round of the Moon Golf Invitational.

RESULTS

MELBOURNE, Fla.---The Chattanooga Mocs had a balanced effort tying for third against a potent field at the Moon Golf Invitational. The Mocs tallied 290 in Tuesday's final round at Duran Golf Club. That's their second-best round of 2017-18.

Sophomore Holly Morgan bounced-back from a tough 36-hole Monday to card 2-under 70 today. That tied her career-low round as she posted four birdies and 12 pars against just two bogeys. Monica San Juan and Cristina Perez turned in 73s, while Megan Woods had a 74 to complete the team score.

UTC was in the middle of the pack through 12 holes at 6-over par on the day. The group began on holes 5-8 in a shotgun start. When they moved to the course's natural starting holes, they turned found their stride.

Morgan birdied holes one and four. Perez added birds at one and two, while San Juan and Woods claimed threes at the par 4 third hole. The six birdies aided the 2-over 290 finish, the second-lowest team score of the day.

There were two top 10 finishes with San Juan tying for 2nd at 2-under 214, while Woods tied for eighth at 2-over 218. Perez shot 225 for the three cards, as Morgan and Maddy McDanel added 229 and 237, respectively.

No. 9 Furman swept team and individual titles. The Paladins ended up with an 863 total led by medalist Alice Chen's 5-under performance. Old Dominion was second with 880, one ahead of Chattanooga and Virginia Tech in third at 881.

The Mocs made quite a run up the leaderboard. They opened with 299 sitting in seventh after 18 of 36 holes Monday. The 292 afternoon round moved the squad into a tie for sixth with 18 to play.

Chattanooga's 582 (+6) total over the final 36 holes was second only to the Paladins by just two strokes. It entered the event No. 77 in the country per Golfstat.com. That made the Mocs the ninth-highest ranked program in the 13-team field.

They bested No. 26 Louisville by seven and No. 36 Kennesaw State by 16, which were two of the three top 40 programs in the lineup. Other strong wins include No. 51 Memphis (1 shot), No. 62 Maryland (12) and No. 60 Michigan (29).

Another positive was the depth of performances. A different Moc led each day with Woods' 69 followed by San Juan with 67. Morgan closed with 70. Season-best 881 total is the lowest over 54 holes since 874 (+10) in the 2016 Cougar Classic.

There were great individual wins as well. San Juan matched the nation's No. 9-ranked golfer in Furman's Natalie Srinivasan. She beat six ranked in the top 100, as did Woods.
