PINEHURST, N.C.---It was a cold, miserable, soggy day at Pinehurst No. 9 for the second round of the Southern Conference Men's Golf Championships. It showed for the Chattanooga Mocs as they dropped into a tie for second with ETSU at 594.
"We got off to a great start over the first three or four holes and I thought this could be a really good day," Coach
Mark Guhne began. "Then we started to give a few back and could never get it turned around."
Junior
Lake Johnson was low man for the Mocs with a 2-over 74.
Luke Long carded 75, while
Andrew Weathers had 77 and
Will Porter 78.
Etienne Brault's 81 was the drop score.
The group started the day two ahead of the Bucs. They turned in 304 as ETSU shot 302 paired together behind UNCG and Furman. That duo got off to an earlier start and made the most of a few drier holes shooting 285 and 294, respectively.
That gives the Spartans (582) a 12-stroke advantage over the Mocs and Bucs with the Paladins a shot back in fourth at 595. Mercer is fifth at 613 followed by Samford (615), Western Carolina (627) and Wofford (643). The quartet of Josh Stockwell (UNCG), Nick Lyerly (UNCG), Keller Harper (Furman) and Bryce Hendrix (UNCG) are tied for the individual lead a 1 under.
"Greensboro had a fantastic day, and they're going to be tough to catch tomorrow," Guhne added. "Anything's possible with golf. The long birdie putt by Will on the last hole put a smile on everybody's face. It moved us into the final pairing.
"That's one thing about this group. We may have bad days, but we never quit fighting."

3 NOTES TO KNOW
- 14-shot swing from first (290) to second round (304) matched the weather as the temperature felt double-digits colder on a rainy day. It's the eighth time the squad's produced a double-figure swing from round-to-round this season, but just the second where it increased (Linger Longer Invite).
- All five Mocs rank in the top 20 individually. They're the only team in the field that can boast that and even inside the top 25 across the board.
- The counting cards are 5 under on the par 5s and just 3 under over the last five rounds, an average of 4.95. UTC posted 4.77 on the par 5s for the season prior to this stretch.
