GREENSBORO, N.C. --- The No. 4 seed Chattanooga Mocs softball team allowed four runs on just three hits during a 4-1 loss to top-seeded and tournament-host UNCG on Thursday in the second round of the Southern Conference Tournament.
Â
The loss puts the Mocs in an elimination game tonight against No. 3 Furman at 5:30 p.m. They will have to win the next five games to capture the SoCon title.
Â
#1 UNCG 4, #4 Chattanooga 1
Starting pitcher's
Celie Hudson and Alicia Bazonski were nothing short of stellar throughout most of the game. Hudson didn't allow a base runner until the fourth and a base-hit until the fifth while Bazonski held the Mocs hitless through four-plus innings.
Â
Chattanooga registered the game's first hit in the top of the fourth when
Aly Walker laced a single up the middle with one out.
Brook Womack followed up with a single of her own to advance her to second base.
Â
After a pop-out put the second out on the board, Emma Strudivant roped a single to center field, but Walker was thrown out at the plate as she tried to break the scoreless tie.
Â
The Mocs put together another rally in the top of the fifth when
Amanda Beltran singled to right with one out and advanced to second on an
Alyssa Coppinger sacrifice bunt.
Â
Pinch-hitter
Morgan Kazerooni drew a walk to put runners on first and second, but the Mocs couldn't cash in after a ground-out to first ended the threat.
Â
UNCG broke up Hudson's no-hit bid in the bottom of the fifth with a single to center with one out. A hit-by-pitch and infield single loaded the bases before back-to-back walks allowed two runners to cross the plate.
Â
Freshman
Allison Swinford entered the game in relief of Hudson with the bases full and one out. She induced a soft grounder, but fielding error gave UNCG a 3-0 lead. She ended the Spartans threat with a pair of pop-outs.
Â
Womack launched her ninth homerun of the season, a solo shot, to left field in the top of the sixth to cut the Mocs deficit to 3-1.
Â
UNCG would plate another run in the bottom half of the sixth on a two-out RBI double to the left-center gap, extending their advantage to 4-1.
Â
Hudson tossed 4.2 innings and allowed just two hits but surrendered three runs (two earned) sand three walks while striking out three. Swinford threw 1.2 innings of relief and allowed one hit and one earned run while also walking one.
Â
Chattanooga out-hit UNCG by a 6-3 margin, but only registered one extra-base hit. Womack continued her offensive rip with a 2-for-3, homerun and RBI performance at the plate. Sturdivant also recorded a multi-hit game after going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles.
Â
Walker and Beltran both finished 1-for-3 and notched singles in the defeat.
