Soccer Plays One Down in Loss at South Alabama

MOBILE, Ala. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's soccer team fell 6-1 to South Alabama Friday night in Mobile, Ala., falling to 2-1 on the year while the Jaguars improve to 2-0.

South Alabama scored first with a shot from Briana Morris in the 13th minute. She took a pass from Ana Helmert, sending the shot into the right side of the net.

However, it wouldn't take long for Chattanooga to even the match. Less than a minute later Bailey Gale charged down the middle of the field toward the box, sending a pass to her right to a streaking Chloe Arnold. Arnold picked up the pass and blasted her shot into the far corner of the net to make it 1-1 in the 14th minute.

The teams traded a couple of fouls before Jordan Mueller would get red carded on a foul just outside the 18-yard box at the 20:18 mark of the match and the Mocs were forced to play one down the remainder of the match.

The Jaguars' Brenna McPartlan connected on the ensuing free kick for what would prove to be the game winner, making it 2-1 in the 21st minute.

"I'm very proud of the effort and fight my team showed tonight," Chattanooga head coach Gavin McKinney said. "Going down to 10 men with 70 minutes to play is extremely tough. Even tougher against a quality opponent like South Alabama.

"We will keep our heads up and get ready for Sunday."

South Alabama, winners of the last five Sun Belt regular season titles, led 3-1 at intermission and went on to score three second half goals, handing Chattanooga its worst loss since falling 6-1 to Mercer in McKinney's first season guiding the Mocs.

The Jaguars outshot the Mocs 16-10 with a 10-2 shots on goal advantage. Hannah Godfrey had two goals for USA on three shots and Ana Helmert had a game-best four shots with one goal and an assist. Moa Ohman had the sixth goal for South Alabama and Anita Agustsdottir tallied a pair of assists.

Arnold and freshman Hollie Massey each had two shots for Chattanooga with six more recording one each. UTC keeper Melia Correa (1-1) made three saves. Freshman Peyton Moore made a save, chasing down a shot after Correa got caught out of the net on a stop attempt.

The Mocs remain in Alabama for a Sunday afternoon matchup at Troy. The game is set to kick off at 3:00 p.m. Eastern time. Live stats will be available and the game will be aired on Facebook. Follow the action live online at GoMocs.com.
