PALM CITY, Fla.---The Chattanooga Mocs began their spring slate with a 6-over par 294 in Sunday's opening 18 at the UNCG Martin Downs Collegiate. That puts the Mocs tied in third at Martin Downs Golf Club.
 
Freshman Leon Bader led the way with a 1-under 71. He's tied for fifth. Bader was joined on the counting cards by Etienne Brault, Oliver Simonsen and Connor Nolan.
 
Brault is two strokes behind Bader with a 73. That's tied for 15th, while Simonsen joins the pair in the top 20 tied for 19th with 74. Nolan is tied for 32nd at 76, as Dominic Jones turned in the drop score of 81.
 
Three Mocs are playing as individuals in the field. Moritz Lammel led that trio tying Nolan with 76. Will Porter is two behind at 78 followed another stroke back by Lake Johnson's 79.
 
Mercer holds the lead at 4-under 284. UNCG is second with 293 just ahead of the Mocs and Samford in third at 294. Kristian Tannum Donaldson of VCU is atop the player leaderboard at 67 (-5).
 
Monday's second round starts at 7:30 a.m. The Mocs are paired again with Southern Conference rivals Mercer, UNCG and Samford. The quartet tees off of No. 10.

3 NOTES TO KNOW

• Bader's 1-under 71 is his second-best 18-hole score and fourth par or better in 13 cards.
• Bader's four birdies were matched by Brault for team high for the round…6th card with three or more birdies for Bader, eighth time for Brault in 16 2018-19 rounds.
• The counting cards did not record a score higher than bogey…it's the fourth time this season the squad avoided double bogey or worse on the team's ledger.
