NFL Scouts Evaluate Mocs at Pro Day

Former University of Tennessee at Chattanooga football student-athlete Isaiah Mack has been hard at work since the end of the 2018 season.  The Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Year graduated with a degree in Criminal Justice in December, then turned his attention to preparing for an opportunity to play in the NFL.

He participated in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl in January and has been working out with former teammate Derek Mahaffey over the last two months.  Their hard work was on display for over a dozen professional scouts at UTC's annual Pro Day in Chattanooga today.

Due to flooding at Scrappy Moore Field, the event was moved to the Baylor School.  Joining Mack and Mahaffey were former Mocs defensive backs C.J. Fritz and Kareem Orr, linebacker Tavon Lawson and receivers Bingo Morton, Joseph Parker, Cody Swabek and Wil Young.

They were performing for representatives from the Atlanta Falcons, Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers, Jacksonville Jaguars, Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Charges, New Orleans Saints, New Yorks Giants, Oakland Raiders, Philadelphia Eagles, San Francisco 49ers and Tennessee Titans.

Mack turned some heads with his 4.94 in the 40-yard dash.  That number would rank 10th among defensive linemen at last month's NFL Combine.  His 32.5-inch vertical jump and 7.50 in the three-cone drill were also top-10 among the combine numbers for defensive linemen.  His 25 bench presses of 225 pounds was just outside the top-15.

"It felt good," stated Mack after his workout.  "It was great to get the opportunity to come out here and perform.  I felt like I did well and hopefully it will be enough to get an opportunity."

Fritz ran the fastest 40 at 4.59, while Mahaffey's 4.60 in the 20-yard shuttle was a top-15 time for defensive linemen.  Parker set the bar with a 36-inch vertical, reaching the top-half of the receivers' numbers at the Combine, and his 6.94 in the three-cone drill was just outside of the top-5.

"It is always a great opportunity for our guys to showcase what they can do and get out there and compete," stated UTC head football coach Rusty Wright.  "We want to thank Coach Massey and the Baylor staff for letting use their facility.  Hopefully, they did well enough to earn a shot at the next level."
