CULLOWHEE, N.C. --- The Chattanooga women closed out the season with a 65-50 win over Western Carolina Saturday in Southern Conference women's basketball action. The Mocs end the season 13-16 overall and 8-6 in league play. Western Carolina is 4-25 on the year and 0-14 against the conference.
"I felt like we pushed tempo today and we settled down at times," Chattanooga head coach
Katie Burrows said. "They did a good job in transition in the second half. We only gave up seven fast break points, which was good."
Eboni Williams led Chattanooga with 15 points and had seven rebounds.
Bria Dial was the second UTC player in double digits with 11 points and both players had two steals.
Arianne Whitaker was just shy of a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds in just 14 minutes.
The Catamounts got off to a 6-0 start but Chattanooga responded with an 18-6 run capped off by Dial's first of two 3-pointers. That put UTC up 18-12 with 5:42 to play in the second quarter. The Cats came back to tie the game 18-18 with 3:49 to play in the second. The Mocs responded with another 11-0 run and went into halftime leading 29-20.
The Mocs never relinquished its lead, but Western Carolina fought back to get to within three, 42-39 at the end of the third quarter.
Chattanooga started the fourth with its third 11-0 run of the game to push the lead 53-39 midway through the final frame and closed the game making 6-of-8 from the free throw line.
Abbey Cornelius scored four of her six points in the final run and had a career-high 10 rebounds.
Shelbie Davenport capped off that run with a 3-pointer and closed the game with eight points, three rebounds and two assists.
Chattanooga ended the season tied with ETSU for third in the SoCon standings and secured the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Ingles Southern Conference Championship presented by General Shale. The Mocs will take on No. 6 seed UNCG in the final game Thursday, March 7 at the U.S. Cellular Center.
