PINEHURST---The Chattanooga Mocs men's golf team ended up third at the Southern Conference Championships. The Mocs carded 292 over the final 18 holes to end with 875 over the three day.
Will Porter ended the tournament with a 2-under 70 and the trio of
Oliver Simonsen,
Lake Johnson and
Etienne Brault each posted 74.
Connor Nolan had the drop score with 76.
Simonsen tied for fourth overall with 2-under 214. Johnson and Porter tied for 10th with 221, while Brault and Nolan just missed the top 20 tying for 22nd at 225.
UNCG ran away with the title with an 11-under par 853. That's the best winning total since Furman's 2010 squad fired 15-under 849 at the Country Club of South Carolina breaking Chattanooga's stretch of three straight titles in 2007, 2008 and 2009. ETSU was second with 865.
"I'm proud of the fight and the effort this week," Coach
Mark Guhne said. "We had one so-so round and it bit us. Give UNCG credit, they played really well and deserved to win.
"Grateful to see Lake and E have good ends to their careers. They've been great to have in our program and have bright futures ahead."
The Bucs Shiso Go won a two-hole playoff to claim medalist over UNCG's Nick Lyerly. The duo shot 11-under 205. The Spartans' Zack Swanson (211) was third ahead of Simonsen and ETSU's Trevor Hulbert at 214.
Simonsen earned All-Southern Conference honors announced in the awards ceremony following championship completion. He's the 31st Moc named to the squad. His fourth-place finish is the squad's 29th top 5 in the event.
"Oliver had a strong season," Guhne added. "He earned that all-conference honor. He got his first win, almost shot under par for the year and improved his average by almost four strokes.
"We're excited about the roster we'll have in 2019-20 and working toward a seventh SoCon title."

3 NOTES TO KNOW
- The 54-hole total of 875 is second-best in the six years No. 9 hosted the championship. The low of 874 came on the initial visit in 2014. It's the 10-lowest tally in the program's 42-year history in the event.
- Simonsen ends his sophomore campaign at 5 over. He just missed becoming the fourth Chattanooga student-athlete to play a par or better season. The previous three came from Jonathan Hodge, -9 in 2007-08 and Stephan Jaeger who turned the trick twice with 1 under in 2010-11 followed by 22 under in 2011-12.
- Porter's 2-under 70 matches his low round in the SoCon Championships. He opened with the same score leading the 2018 tourney after 18 holes. It's his 12th par or better card this season, 20th of his career. He tied for the top score in the field on the par 5s at 7 under birdieing all four today.
