ABOUT CHATTANOOGA GOLF
FRANKLIN, Tenn.---The Chattanooga Mocs were in pretty good shape through 15 holes at the Mason Rudolph Championships. The final few proved fatal as the Mocs sit in 15th after an opening round 291.
The squad turned at 3 under before a stumble over 10 and 11 dropped the tally to 2 over.
Lake Johnson's birdie on the par 4 12th got the needle moving the other direction. Through 16 holes, the counting cards read 1 over with back-to-back par 5 coming in.
Those turned treacherous. The quintet played the deuce at 6 over with two birdies, two bogeys and two triples to drop down the leaderboard. At the end of the day, individual
Moritz Lammel had the top Chattanooga score with even-par 71.
Connor Nolan and
Dominic Jones led the team total with 1-over 72s.
Etienne Brault added 73, while Johnson and
Oliver Simonsen carded 74s. That puts the Mocs one behind Georgia Southern and Ball State at 290 and three ahead of Cincinnati with 294.
No. 25 Tennessee is the early leader at 269 with a six-shot cushion over second-place Memphis (275). Cullan Brown (Kentucky) and Nolan Ray (Tennessee) are tied atop the player's board with 64.
Round two tomorrow at the Vanderbilt Legends Club starts at 8:30 a.m., Eastern Time, for the good guys. They're paired with Cincinnati and individuals from Vandy and Mississippi State.

3 NOTES TO KNOW
- The 291, while disappointing, is the Mocs top opening 18 since carding 1-over 289 to begin the Autotrader Collegiate in October. It's fourth best overall.
- Lammel's 71 ties for his low round turned in over the final 18 holes of the Autotrader Collegiate. It's also his second par or better card. His six birdies is a career high.
- Nolan's five birdies marks the fifth time this season with five or more over 18 holes. His season-high seven came in the first 18 at the Grandover Collegiate in the fall. He averages 4.0 birdies over his first round this year.
