Mocs Get Win 100 for McKinney in SoCon Opener

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The Chattanooga women's soccer team shut out Wofford 3-0 in the Southern Conference opener for both teams Friday night getting career win No. 100 for head coach Gavin McKinney in a game that began in blazing, hot sunshine and ended with a lightning strike.

The Mocs got on the board early with a goal from Osa Iyare in the eighth minute. She took a pass from freshman Mackenzie Smith and after gathering the ball at her feet, she fired a shot in from outside the box to the upper left corner for what would prove to be the game winner.

Junior Maddie Burman added an insurance goal just before the half to put Chattanooga up 2-0. Hollie Massey slotted the ball into Burman running to the right at the top of the box. She picked up the pass on her back foot and rolled it into the bottom left corner of the goal.

Maggie Shaw headed home the Mocs' third goal of the game in the 64th minute off a corner kick from Massey who served it right into the box. Shaw was at the near side of the box, nearly alone, and rose high enough to catch the pass and head it home.

With inclement weather bearing down on the UTC Sports Complex, the game was delayed in the 92nd minute and would not resume for another hour and seven minutes. The teams returned to the field just before 9:00 p.m., but another lightning strike from another storm, called a halt to the action at 9:01 p.m.

As the announcement was made, congratulating McKinney on his victory, the sideline erupted in cheers as his team celebrated around him.

The Mocs improve to 6-2-2 on the year and are 1-0 in league play while the Terriers fall to 3-6 overall and 0-1. Chattanooga will host Furman Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Sports Complex. Admission is free. Bring your lawn chair and a blanket and enjoy the game.
