Overall thoughts after last weekend's win over EIU.
"Great win last week. I thought our guys played hard, not very smart at times, but they played hard. They tried to play physical and I think that is a good thing. We made a lot of mistakes that didn't hurt us, but mistakes you can't make. There were some nerves on our sideline and not a lot of emotion or energy to start with, which concerned me. But once the game went on we started to relax and we started to understand what we could do. We started making plays and that gave us an opportunity to win."
Â
On making mistakes and committing too many penalties.Â
"The things I was worried about, as a staff us doing, were any delay of game penalties, substitution penalties, pre-snap type things. Our communication problems in that way, we had to take a timeout in the second half and I was upset about that. That falls on me. You have a guy running out there to get another guy out and there's no yelling, you get out there and wonder why that guy hasn't left the field. We had a lot of missed assignments defensively. The pre-snap penalties we haven't been doing, but that's something we need to eliminate. That's why I was so upset because we haven't been doing those things. We have to clean that up. It's hard enough to move the football against anybody, but you can't put yourself at first-and-15, it changes the way you do things."
On the overall effort from the team.
"I thought the guys played really hard. Defensively, we played a bunch of snaps, and some of that was on their own because of penalties that kept drives going. I was really pleased. We had some offensive linemen chasing the football and moving people. We missed a couple cuts and on the perimeter, but those guys up front played hard. Nick [Tiano] had a lot of time to throw the football for the most part. If we continue to do that, we'll be okay. That was my biggest concern going in to it, I wanted to make sure how hard we were going to play for 60 minutes."
On heading to Jacksonville State this weekend.
"We're getting ready to go to Jacksonville, Alabama to play a great Jacksonville State team. They'll be hungry and ready to win after they went to Southeastern Louisiana last weekend. We've played them 42 times and haven't beat them that much, I don't know how much you can call it a rivalry when you don't win there. They're a good football team at every level. They have good defensive linemen and two really good linebackers, a real good strong safety and good in the secondary. Offensively, they are a little young up front but they do a lot of good things. We'll have our hands full, but it's a great place to play in a great atmosphere and it should be a lot of fun. We're looking forward to it."
