Rusty Wright, Head Coach
Overall thoughts after 13-10 loss at WKU.
"Our kids battled. They played like how I thought they would. I didn't do a very good job of being a head coach at the end to give them a good enough chance. There's no reason we shouldn't have won that game. I have to do a better job of getting us over the hump. I was pleased in the end of it, though. Couldn't have asked for a better chance to come up here and win."
Â
On the team's performance against its expectations.
"They performed like I thought they would. They battled. No one ever quit, no one panicked. We just kept lining up and playing. Making them play. We eventually got a little worn down, but we're okay. We didn't have a couple pieces here today and if that's the case, we'll be okay."
Â
On coming out and executing the game plan.
"We did what we thought we should do. We ran the ball hard. We gave ourselves some options. They changed some things up in the second half. We'll have to throw the ball better, teams won't let us just line up and run the ball like that. Guys ran hard, didn't turn it over, and gave us a chance. All we could ask for."
Â
On the team's effort.
"Kids played hard, they were flying around, giving themselves opportunities, they were having fun. We just went out there and played. We didn't do anything different from last year, we just lined up and played."
Â
On the experience of today's game at WKU and moving forward.
"It was awesome. There are no moral victories, but it was just so good to be in that pre-game meal. It was so good to be in that locker room before the game. Even though it hurt as bad as it hurt after this game was over, it was so good being in that locker room with them. We'll keep building on it and we'll be okay."
Rashun Freeman, Sr., LB
On the mindset coming in and following the game.
"We'll look back at it and know what we're capable of. They're FBS, we're FCS. We knew we could come in and win this game. Even before this game, we had the confidence in our players compared to who they have. That's our mindset."
Â
On stopping an early WKU trick play attempt.
"I didn't expect them to try something like that, that early in the game. We were playing good defense, so they had to do some trickery to try and catch us off guard."
Â
On what to take away from this game.
"We know this our first game. Usually those first games are filled with mistakes. If we can eliminate the mistakes we had this game, however many little ones we had, it shows we can be great."
Â
Ailym Ford, So., RB
On what to improve on moving forward.
"We have to work on our attitude. I love the way we kept fighting despite the adversity throughout the game. I feel like we can build on that as a team and we have a lot of things to fix. We'll work on that in the offseason."
Â
On preperation coming in to today's game.
"We were really excited. We were prepared for it coming in. We practice hard and scrimmage every Saturday. We did a lot of contact through the week. I felt like we were ready, but as far as the speed of the game, that's what our weakness was."
Â
Final thoughts from today and moving forward.
"I was just so excited to be back out there with my team. I still have a lot to work on. We're really excited and we're ready to go."
Â
Jay Person, So., LB
On early trick play attempts from WKU.
"It made us feel like we knew we had them. They couldn't pull off any runs on us and they had to pull some trick plays out of the back pocket. It shows a lot."
Â
Thoughts following the tight 13-10 loss.
"It hurts because we haven't played a game. We were expecting to win. We weren't expecting to come out here and it just be a good game. We'll be back, we'll come back from this."
Â
On the defensive effort today.
"That D-line. That's how were making a lot of plays, they don't get a lot of credit, but I thank them every day. That's the defense right there. We'll be pretty good in the next couple years."
Â
On the successful strip-sack late in the first half.
"It was a really good play. I told
Kam Jones and
Ty Boeck, if they do a pass play, we're going to get there. I knew the call and knew what it was. It was a great play. D-Max [
Devonnsha Maxwell] was taking three blocks every time, it was pretty easy for me to get back there and make a play."
