MACON, Ga.---The Chattanooga Mocs got off to a good start at the Mercer Invitational. The squad is tied for first through 36 holes with Western Kentucky at 595.

It began with 299 in the morning round sitting in third behind WKU (294) and Mercer (294). The Mocs made up all five strokes in the afternoon moving past the host Bears at 597. ETSU is fourth with 601.

Daphne van Son paced the effort holding a one-shot lead at 2 under. She turned in 2-under 70 to start and came back with level-par 72 just ahead of WKU's Sarah Arnold. She's joined in the top five by teammate Esme Hamilton. Hamilton tallied 74 and 72 with her 146 total tying for fifth.

Dorota Zalewska, who won last time out at Wofford, added 152 with 78 and 74. Beatriz Barrios had 77 and 78 for 155. That came with the field playing all within its own team throughout the day.

The pairing shift to traditional for Tuesday's final round. The Mocs, Hilltoppers and Bears start on the first hole at 9:20 a.m., with the last of their five groups taking the tee at 10.

3 Notes to Know
  • The counting cards didn't record a single stroke over bogey throughout today's 36 holes. That tripled the number of 18s without an other to be found through 11 rounds. The season low for a tournament is five at the opening Hoover Invitational.
  • van Son's 2-under 70 was her first subpar card. Her last three have been par or better finishing with a 72 at the Terrier Intercollegiate and today's 70 and 72. She joins Barrios (4) and Hamilton (3) with multiple par or better numbers.
  • van Son's 70 tied for the low round of the season by a Moc. It's the third time out of five it's come in the second round. The previous four: Thompson, Hoover Invite Rd 2; Barrios, Lady Red Wolves Cl. Rd 2; Barrios, Lady Red Wolves Cl. Rd 3; Hamilton, Lady Red Wolves Cl. Rd 3.
