Softball Downs Marshall, Falls to WKU on Friday

Chattanooga softball opened the 2020 Chattanooga Challenge with a win over Marshall before dropping a lopsided contest to WKU in the doubleheader finale.

CHATTANOOGA --- The Chattanooga Mocs softball team grinded out a tough doubleheader split against Marshall and Western Kentucky on the opening day of the Chattanooga Challenge on Friday. UTC defeated the Thundering Herd, 10-8, before falling in the chilly nightcap to the Hilltoppers, 12-2.

The doubleheader split moves Chattanooga's overall record to 2-2. Marshall dropped to 2-3 following the loss while WKU improved to 5-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED

TOP 1st 0-2 Saige Pye belted a two-out, two-run homer to left center to give Marshall an early lead. Both runs were unearned after a throwing error kicked off the rally.
BOT 1st 1-2 Morgan Kazerooni drives in the first UTC run with an RBI single to right with the bases loaded.
BOT 1st 3-2 With the bases loaded, Katie Corum ripped a two-RBI double in the right-center gap to give Chattanooga its first lead. WATCH

TOP 3rd 5-3 Mya Stevenson leads off the inning with a solo homerun to left
TOP 3rd 5-8 Following three Chattanooga fielding errors in the inning, Marshall plated five additional runs and re-gained its lead.
BOT 4th 9-8 Morgan Kazerooni and Gracey Kruse each drew bases loaded walks, sandwiched by a Hayleigh Weissenbach two-RBI single up the middle.
BOT 4th 10-8 Emily Coltharp added to the rally with a bases loaded walk of her own to cap off the five-run fourth.

TOP 1st 0-1 WKU's Kennedy Sullivan laced an RBI double down the line in left to bring in the game's first run.
TOP 1st 0-3 One batter later, Paige Carter went deep over the left field wall for a two-run homerun, extending the early lead. 
TOP 2nd   0-4 Paige Carter added to her RBI total with a bases loaded walk on a 3-1 count.
BOT 2nd 1-4 Katie Corum went deep for the second time this season, ripping a solo shot off the bleachers in left. WATCH
BOT 2nd 2-4 Emily Coltharp continued her hitting ways with a two-out, RBI single to left center, scoring Cameren Swafford from second.
TOP 4th 2-6 WKU's Jordan Thomas sent one deep down the right field line and over the wall for a two-run homerun.
TOP 5th 2-8 WKU's TJ Webster recorded an RBI single to left with the bases loaded before a SAC fly from Jordan Thomas allowed the second run of the inning to score.
TOP 7th 2-12 The Hilltoppers kept the foot on the gas in the seventh, scoring four runs on six hits to put the game out of reach.

CHATTANOOGA NOTABLES
· Chattanooga allowed 12 runs against WKU, the most in a game in nearly two seasons. It's the most runs allowed at home since UNCG posted 15 runs on April 29, 2017 and the most at home against a non-conference opponent since IUPUI on February 18, 2017.
· Aly Walker went a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs scored in game one's win over Marshall. It's the first four-hit game of Walker's incredible career at UTC to-this-date. She added a 1-for-3 performance against WKU to raise her season average to an even .500 (7-for-14). Walker has a hit in all four games this season and at least a hit in eight of her last nine games dating back to last season.
· Emily Coltharp posted her third multi-hit game in the season's first four games. She went 2-for-4 against both Marshall and WKU, collecting an RBI in each. She's tied with Walker for most hits so far this season (7) and carries a second-best .467 (7-for-15) average.
· Hayleigh Weissenbach went 2-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored in the win over Marshall. She's now posted two multi-hit games this season and leads the team with seven RBI.
