UTC drops SoCon dual to the Mountaineers in McKenzie Arena
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team dropped a 27-12 Southern Conference match to Appalachian State in McKenzie Arena today. The Mocs fall to 5-8 overall and 3-1 in league duals, while the Mountaineers improve to 7-2 overall and 4-0 in SoCon action.
UTC opened with a 6-5 decision by No. 19 Fabian Gutierrez over Sean Carter. The Mocs' 3-0 lead was short-lived as ASU won the next six bouts. Bonus points at 133 and 141 gave the Mountaineers an insurmountable 22-3 lead.
The Mocs kept fighting and No. 20 Matthew Waddell scored a pin at 184 over Julian Gorring. Waddell improved to 19-6 overall with his team-leading eighth pin of the season.
Senior Rodney Jones closed out the Mocs scoring with a 4-2 decision over Paul Carson. That upped Jones' record to 14-9 overall and 3-1 in SoCon action.
Next on the schedule for the Mocs is another big SoCon dual. UTC travels to No. 19 Campbell next weekend for a 2:00 p.m. (E.S.T.) match on Saturday, Feb. 8, in Buies Creek, N.C.
